Please take a lsiten to this fucked up distortion I'm getting when recording all of a sudden. It doesn't show up as much on vocals or guitar but it's there. On the drums it's really prominent. I use Cool Edit pro and an SB Live card. I posted this in the Cool Edit Pro forum and no one thought it was my software. Could this be my sound card?

Any ideas?

BTW I don't know much about latency or buffering but I haven't recently changed any of my settings.

What mic are you using...start there! Switch out your mic and then try it. Still there, move on down the line.

What's the sampling rate and bit depth at?

latency and buffering wont do that (IMO)....bit rate or sampling rate either (IMO)....

whats your whole signal chain?....

do you get this on just that drum or the whole kit?.....

In Sound Forge it looks like some nasty digital distortion superimposed on the signal. It gets exposed in the tail of the decay pattern. Beats me where it comes from, though.
No pun intended...

Thanks for the responses. I was beginning to lose hope there for a while.

First of all, it's not the mic. I've tried different mics. It also comes across with running directly in to the mixer. It comes across a liittle bit on vocal tracks and guitar as well. It's just not as prominent as on the drum tracks like this snare example.

It has nothing to do with my mixer, either. When I monitor the mixer in the headphones out in the mixer it sounds fine.

Signal chain = mic>compressor>mixer>sound card (pretty simple, eh?) I also tried it without the compressor and I still got the distortion so that's not it.

The sampling rate is normal CD quality. The bit rate is normal, too can't recall the spec...

So that leaves the sound card right? I don't have a problem with getting a new sound card I just don't want to spend the money if I don't need to.

That sounds very digital to me. What soundcard are you using?
