I was wondering if there were any free plug-in that I can download so I can get a distorted vocal sound, like the Stroke I suppose. I'm recording a band right now and they want to distort the voice on one of the tracks. There is a plug-in called Blockfish that supposeable does what I want, but it is not compatible with Pro Tools LE. Can someone recommend a program that I can use in Pro Tools that has the same effect?

Distorting vocals

Try a guitar distortion - like an amp simulator of some sort. Or do an analog FX loop and mix in a distortion pedal... Works OK for me.

If sans amp came with your ptle then use that. just turn down what doesn't apply and adjust what you need, I use it all the time.

Do you mean amplitude?

Yes, amplitube can sometimes work wonders for a vocal track if you're shooting for a particular effect. Give it a shot!

No I meant sans amp but yes I've also used amplitude although I don't like it quite as much as sans amp, I do love it for bass guitars.

There is a wonderful pole filter called ohm my god www.ohmforce.com download this mutha fucker it's good. :)

Hey Tangerine I don't think that plug is free anymore, says its only available to bundled customers.

just did this last night - distort some headphones with your vocal, mic it, record it, mix it - works great.

unplugged  ,

You say you want your vocals to sound like the Strokes eh? I ran across some article online a while back on the recording of their first album and it talked about how the singer had his mic plugged into a little Peavey practice amp that was distorted and they miced the amp up. I tried this myself and got some very interesting results. Try it out! I'll try to find that article again.

Sans Amp has a preset called Vocal Thru Amp - works nicely. Also - Izoptope Trash is great for that - and users have made some cool vocal distortion presets.

I asked a similar question last week - you may also need to roll off your lowend with some EQ. But I think that has something to do with the vocal quality of your singer.

Agreed Amplitube is a great bass plugin for all my Jesus and Marychain driven bass parts!

i have a little peavey rage 158 guitar practice amp, and i toyed around with some settings. you can get VERY close to the strokes sound with these settings: max volume, max pre, overdrive on, min low, max mid, max treble. then use the post as the actual volume knob. sounds pretty identical. the mid changes the tone a lot, so you can take some edge off of it by turning down the mid a little.

Sometimes distortion is not a distortion at all. Try ring modulation for instance with the modulator's frequency set pretty low (20-80Hz for instance) to give it a raspy effect, then compress the shit out of it with the quickest attack and release settings so that the compressor itself starts distorting. You'll need to experiment with different compressors to see which one works best for this kind of thing. Then, mix in the unaffected vocal with the messed up one to improve intelligibility.

Use a crappy EQ way too much and then run it through Amplitube or something similar.

Distorted vocals is the only use I've found for the piece of crap EQ plug that comes with PT LE. But hey it did do the trick on that one distorted vocal :D

I personally like to just play my vocals through a guitar amp and use its distortion. It turns out pretty interesting, especially if do that while tracking so you can hear the resulting sound in your earphones.

Just run a line out into your guitar amp and rerecord it. Then you can mix in the distorted track as much as you need without losing all the clarity of the lead vocal.

sansamp works great but if all else fails amplitude will do the trick if you tweak it right...try bypassing the amp modeling and turn overdrive up...its all about tweaking until you get the sound they want.
