Yeah. I agree. If you're relying on pedals or SS equipment, turn it all the way down. :D

Wow I'm really surprised at you guys. I can understand Greg_L being annoyed since he's been exposed to it, but I just CAN'T see how any audio guy could ever find it anything but highly informative and entertaining. The first time I read it I was rolling on the floor in hysterics.

Get offended easily, or what?

If you can get over his abrasive writing style you'll see there is an absolute wealth of information there from a guy who's made more heavy records than you can imagine. If you've listened to punk, hardcore, or metal over the last twenty years, you'll have heard his records.

Just sayin'.

If you run a Heavy Metal pedal through a Crate practice amp and crank everything all the way up and it doesn't sound like pure Black Metal hell (or maybe My Bloody Valentine) then something is definitely wrong!

It's not that I found it offensive - it's just annoying trying to read it. It's like when I spend time with a compulsive liar - it's not that I believe what they say; my bullshit filter just gets clogged up and I can't listen to any more.

OK, the real operative word here is distorted. Start by taking the distortion off, at a relatively low volume, work to get a great full tone with your guitar. Then roll up the gain or distortion. The guitar sounds sucky? The distortion will sound sucky. Now, for the mic. The vocalist hates it when they sound like they are recorded. They want their voice to sound like they are in the room. So mic accuracy is the real issue. Often you love the sound of your guitar amp i the room so you jam a mic up to the cone and wonder why it doesn't sound the same. Start with a room mic. Get the round you want on that. Bad sound, bad recording. Good sound, good recording. Now, add in two more tracks, one miced close and one pulled direct. (no distortion). That will guarantee you can sharpen the guitar without affecting the distortion. I'm a drummer. Drums are the hardest. They never sound like they do in the room. That's how I learned this method and that's why I applied it to distorted guitars. It works. Do NOT fix it in the mix. Get it right the first time.

So just share the useful information and cut the bull and that read becomes about 20 times shorter and more useful. I didn't say he is stupid, I'm saying that over-hyped "article" is stupid.
 
Well, like I said, if you've read it before and you find it long winded, fine. I get it.

Others might feel differently and I think if it's taken lightly, there's lots of useful information there, not to mention some laughs.

One more thing...

It's not really an article. It was a thread that was posted years ago on prosound web so in my book he can be forgiven for it sounding like it was written off the cuff, which I'm sure it was.

I don't discount the info in the wrticle/rant/write-up, whatever you wanna call it. But is it really that special? I seem to remember it being little bits of pretty basic common sense type stuff buried under massive piles of ranting.

With christmas being tomorrow, I'm about to have a ton of time sitting in a recliner at my mom's and in-law's houses, so I'll re-read it and get a fresh opinion. It's been a while. Maybe I'll like it better this time.
