Is there a way around having to put my guitar down and walking over to the computer to click the mouse on the record button and then walking back etc when you are recording on your own. I have distanced where I record from the computer so as to avoid the fan being picked u on the track but could do without the exercise.
Any and all advice gratefully received
Cheers Steve

There are a few ways.
Wireless mouse?
You could also look at a little single fader control surface if you like the hands-on transport.

If you have a tablet (Android/Windows/Mac) there are a few wireless programs they make for just such a thing. I've been thinking about trying out the Leap Motion hand input device.

Wireless mouse at this point seems a rather simple and straight forward solution.

A really slow four count intro will solve that problem ..... :D

One could hire a nutless monkey to push the record button. :p

But seriously. A nutless monkey could do your job. - Tom Cruse. (Tropic Thunder)

Yes, you can get a wireless keyboard and mouse for about 15quid /$$s

I have one of these
Frontier Designs TranzPort Wireless DAW Controller at zZounds
But they are sadly discontinued, cannot understand why? Brilliant concept and product.

For serious distance remoting you can get adaptors that can send VGA and usb down a pair of CAT5e cables. 150mtrs+ is claimed.

In fact you can get adaptors that will send almost any signal you can think of down CAT5e.

You're talking about acoustic guitar, right? Because I see no benefit in moving away from your computer when you're recording electric guitar.

Unless it hums like cnut?

I'm not following. Unless what hums like a cnut? :D

Bear in mind, I'm not a guitar player, so I genuinely am not following how an electric guitar near a computer would affect anything. Do you mean the pick-ups would pick up the hum of the computer? Or do you mean that getting near the computer can make the pick-ups hum? I'm thinking you have to worry more about where your amp with the mic in front of it are located.

Sorry did not know you were a sane, non gitist! Yes, general hum and hash can be picked up from computers if you have the guitar too close.
This was probably more of a problem with the old CRT monitors but then modern desktops are now more non-shielding plastic than the steel they once were.

Steve,

1. There are extension USB cables, usually 6 feet long that can be used for both wired & wireless mice.

My wireless mouse has a small dongle that can be plugged into the USB extension cable and positioned anywhere I think it needs to be to be aimed at the distance mouse.

2. If you have an iphone or android, there is what's known as 'Touch DAW', which I believe is free or just a few dollars, at least for the android, that can control your DAW from a distance.

3. What about a wired or wireless keyboard?

Usually play & record are button presses on the keyboard, which would be even easier using the same process as the mouse.

4. Lastly, you can buy & change quite easily your computer fans to ultra-quiet ones for just $10-15 each. My rig only uses 3.

My very sensitive Neumann TLM 103 sits just a few feet away from my rig, and I don't hear a damn thing, even pre-amped.

Lot's of options to try. Just make sure that anytime you open up your computer case to look or work inside, you unplug it, and touch the metal components before and always prior to touching any circuit boards, no many how many times.

Wireless Mixer on Android phone/tablet. Free, easy to set up, gives you some fader controls too.....amongst other things.

There is of course a limit of about 5mtrs for usb leads unless you co for active ones. But for mouse and kbds, if you have an old PS2 rig in the loft you can extend these a very long way indeed, again CAT5 cable is favourite.
Simplest way is to just chop the PS2 plugs off leaving about 500mm of lead and then strip and splice.

You can leave the PS2 extensions plugged in all the time and use usb for local control.

Dave.
