Mic technique, move in close on the low softer parts and move back a bit when doing the loud higher parts. This will also help with the mix as you won't have to gain ride / compress as much. Mic technique is part of learning to sing.

The best way for you to know.. is to record yourself singing the exact same phrase repeatedly and listen to how each is different.

I will tell you though.. as time goes on I find myself liking the sound further and further away. The song makes a difference too.. sometimes the "upclose" sound isn't right for a song.

Just mark the spots and experiment. They make different sounds. Use the ones you like.
