disregarding the MOTU 896's pre's...i

i heard once that it's possible to "go around" the pre's if you simply place the input switch to the FIXED position.

is this correct?

or is there another way? would be cool just to use it as a standalone ad/da converter. (ie. having the opportunity).

If you want to bypass the trim circuit you can place the selector switch at +4 fixed or if you want to use an input for a line level device you can place the switch to Line.
So yes it can function as a stand alone A/D D/A. Meaning, you aren't bound to using it's preamps solely. And if that's the case (not wanting to use the 896's preamps) I'd recommend the 828mkII.

i'm waiting for the 896, and it has more options than the 828mkII, so i'll check that out first.

why do you favor the 828mkii?

Basically because I have no real need for the preamps on the 896 (already have that covered externally) nor am I using any gear that requires AES/EBU (S/PDIF works fine for my needs).
Also, I don't foresee myself recording at 192kHz in the near future (48kHz is fine for me and 96kHz is still available if I get the urge to go any higher).
Lastly, the 828 is about $250 cheaper.
They are both fine interfaces, but if you don't need all of the features of the 896 .... no point in paying for them.

896HD's converter is better than 828MKII. If you need a better tool I prefer to 896HD.
