I'm using Diskeeper 10 here and it works wonderfully. I've been using it since an earlier version (which I don't recall) for a few years now.

I also use DK 10. I can't say that it makes any significant improvement in the PC's performance.

i just use the defrag that came with windows. dont really notice much difference either afterwards so i only do it every few months or so. although i found a free program called ccleaner that has speeded my computer a bit that cleans up old files from uninstalled programs, registry errors and such and it works quite well considering it's completely free.

Do we all know what defragmenting a hard disk actually does?

Just curious, as defrag'ing won't give you a noticeable performance boost, but it is a good thing to do every couple months... not doing it could lead to performance lag over a long period of time.

I defrag my Windows XP partition at least weekly. Amazing how fragmented it can get so quickly, and things DO run a little smoother if it's kept defragmented regularily.

Basically when files are deleted, they aren't actually deleted. Instead, bits are written that let the OS know that it's empty space. Over time, these can add up to a large amount of wasted space. Defragging basically reorganizes the location of your files on the HD to use the space that is actually being wasted and it usually results in quicker I/O from your hard disk, noticeable or not. The closer things are to each other, the faster they will be able to be read/written.
