I have been putting a multiband compressor and EQ in the main bus to simulate a rough mastering of my tracks prior to mixdown. I do this after I have finished tracking. Ocassionally I will drop reverb out there too to add a little room sound. Very lite on this however.

This has helped to hear when I am overcompressing individual tracks or putting too much reverb on individual tracks. Once I have the sound I like I delete all the mainbus effects and mix it down to the final stereo sound. When I go to mastering later it really saves a lot of time not having to go back to the mix and fix those overprocessed tracks.

The thing I like is that I end up using a lot less compression, EQ, and reverb on individual tracks as a result I am getting a cleaner sound for mastering.

Anyone else use this?

...yeah.

...I do, occasionally. Specially when I mix more than 8 audio tracks in sonar.
