Just mixed this today. Ran it through wavelab for the 5 minute "master" job-i mght have messed it up a bit...the vocals sound a bit "brain dartish".

A few recording notes-
-first drum recording with my new oktava mc012 mics(stereo overheads)

-drum part took 3 weeks-but he played a real nice part

-end vocal part was recorded with effects-wanted to get a "seal" kinda sound

-theres a wierd vocal echo in the chorus(still working on it)

-acoustics-recorded with said oktavas

-rolled off the lows-and added a bit of high end in wavelab

-4 tracks of e-bow in the bridge-wanted to make the sound of an imaginary plane-whistling to the ground (didnt work-ended up a mess...)

-sounds like the vox need to come down a notch and push the volume of the whole tune a bit..

-songs about a fear of flying-kind of a downer tune

I really like your style on this tune. I agree with your assessment on the vocals volume. The kit sounded great. Guitars sounded good..mixed really well. Harmony part trailing out on "goodbye" sounded great (what was that... vox humana or keyboard?)

Great sounding recording/ mixed pretty damn good IMO.

I'm downloading this.

All I can say is, I hope TO GOD there's a guitar solo in it.

LOL

i don't necessarily think that the vocal has too much volume, but there are some parts that pierce a tad too much...maybe a little more compression rather than lowering the volume......

sounds really good..........the drums sound great......so does the acoustic........so does everything....
really nice job

Vocals can never EVER be too loud. LOL.

Fuck man, it all sounds good to me. I wish I could be more helpful, but you've got a pretty good handle on what you're doing, I think.

Some of those background vox actually sound female-ish...which is cool.

Okay, I'll pick on something. The kit sounds too real for me. LOL. I'm spoiled by samples, I think. But seriously, the snare sounds...I don't know..."thin" is not the right word. "Loose," maybe? Hell, I don't know.

Forget me...it's good.

Oh, I wouldn't know anything about that type of song :o

;)

Very, very cool... the thing that strikes you here is the quirky rhythm, and how closely the drums seem to "follow" the voice/guitar, and not "lead" anything... they seem to be the followers. IMO that may be over done, and a bridge where the drummer loosens up and breaks out into his own groove might add a dimension to this song...

But the feel/vibe is just... choice. Almost reminds me of "Matthews"; (for some reason, that's rattlin' around in my brain, that I've actually heard some "Matthews" tune where the drums follow... and I pretty much don't like "Matthews" :p)

But sounds like you may. Good stuff. Thumb. Fonzie.

Wow you guys are quick-thanks for your time.

Hogan-tanks-yeah-no synth-singers got a high voice-hearing the mp3 was my first listen to this outside the "studio"-the vocals always sound louder elsewhere-try mixing with the singer in the room and turning down the vocals a few notches hehe

mixmaster chris-no solo lmao-we got a few songs with solo's-you'll get to shred my shredding sometime soon- I agree with u on the snare-i havent got a good snare sound yet :( . Thanks for your time-you better blow off one of my songs soon i almost expect you to reply hehe

powder-i compared my acoustic sound to yours before i posted this-yours sounded better-and so did your voice track-think i can improve this still-thanks

participant--uuugh I don't really like "matthews" either-though i like that "drive" song-sorry to put you through this in that case lol-good observation on the drum track-like i said we worked on this on and off for 3 weeks-trying to get the right "feel" and part. I wanted a Manu Katche(in your eyes peter gabriel) feel. Finally i went in and knocked out a drum track second shot and told the drummer "play it like this"(he doent read this site luckily). So that accounts for the simple "following" part during the verse-the chorus and bridge parts he came up with-This song is kinda on the wimpy/whiney side-and kind of long-not for everybody-but i was happy with the recording. Thanks for your usually perceptive comments(you'd make a good music critic me thinks)

I like this a lot. nice vocals....and a cool rhythm that's definitely different. I love the drum sound....it sounds like a drum in the room with you...very cool.

I think I agree that it would be helpful for there to be a few spots where the rhythm settles into a groove for a while. This, while very cool, is just a bit too disjointed.

Nice work man.

I think this sounds great. If I could change anything it would probably be the drums. I'd prefer them a little less busy. But barring that, I'd like them a little farther back in the mix.

Around 2:44 the vox seem to recede a bit.

But this is just me trying to come up with complaints. *very* haunting, memorable tune and performance. Overall a big fat thumbs up.

different....yes.......better.....don't think so..........your acoustic sound is really solid as it is..............your vocal track is 95% to where it needs to be...........100% performance wise.........i think a touch more compression would probably do the trick

All-in-all it is a great mix and great performance. I would like to hear a little more kick.. I like the chorused harmonies.... Great job Stratomaster!

Sounded great. Maybe pull the vocals back in the mix a bit so that they're not right in the listener's face. Compression helps with that a bit as does 'verb.

Very, very nice. Drums sound great (the Octavas are very kind to cymbals). The vocal is a bit hot but other than that it's a pretty good mix. I like it.

Wow!

Everytime you post a new tune you head in a different direction.
Mix is real clean. Are the acoustics panned hard? There is such a seperation I am curious how far you have them spread.

Drums are killer. Sounds like it would be a battle for most drummers. Recorded very precisely!

You are a great singer............
How'd ya like to sing one of my tunes!

Nice job (as usual)

Joel

Hello,

Please pardon any repetion in reply. I wrote some notes while listening and then glossed over the previous replies. I'll stick to my notes as written.

Nice voice and backing vox!

I think the lead vox could be tamed some with compression and then placed in a better seat in the mix. It kinda jumps around. I know this is hard due to the subtle additions in singing style.

Your drums sound great. Full and live and real and worthy of my envious hate.

I did peak at Participants comment on the syncopation of drum and vocal accent and I heard it too. It is cool but repeats some.......I got a "Rush" feel from it that I liked but, I worried me that I'd catch on so quickly cause, my ears are less than average when it comes to mixes and hearing and stuff  :)

Very nice listen. I hope to hear more.

Peace,
Theron.

last bump-

Lt. Bob-Thanks for listening and your comments-I'm real pleased with the drum sound-and the performance-surprised so many people don't think it grooves--oh well 1 out of 2 aint bad :)-thanks for your time and comments/

groucho-hmm another one doesnt think the drums are groovin-think i'll try mixing them a bit lower next time-maybe i was to eager to show off my first(and only) decent drum recording.I notice that vocal thing too--good ears thanks.....

Scott-thanks for listening-I hear ya on the kick-it sorta comes and goes-maybe ill try the ole compressor-

Jr-thanks-ya the vocals was the big thing i noticed-they're always louder-when i get off my monitors-we may have a blown tweeter-

Track rat-cool man glad you liked the drum sound-you get some great drum sounds yourself-i'm still hit and miss with it

JCMM-thanks for listening bro-yes-I come up with a riff and I'll use it -regardless of style or whatever-we've got some diff stuff coming-a wierd blues with spoken word-a mid eastern flavored acoustic tune etc.-hopefully when listened to as a whole-something will tie it all together-maybe it'll sound like disjointed trash-acoustics were panned about halfway between center and full-left-right-using cakewalk-don't like their pan controls-gotta sit there doing math in your head to make things even...uhh I'm not the singer-though i showed him your reply-he said "send it over"-though honestly our "studio" will be pretty much heading into storage for a while in about a week-which is why I'm scrambling to finish a few things up before the drought-anyway im rambling-when do we get to hear something new from you-weren't you the "popcorn fart" snare guy?? lol

theron-yes you are for sure right on about the vocals-I was surprised how loud they came out-a remix is in order-yeah and the drums seem to be a yay for the sound and a nay for the part from the general concensus-I thought this was the best playing the drummer ever did-almost exactly what i had in mind-oh well...thanks for listening-its more interesting hearing what people don't like-tough to get that from friends etc.

_____________

until next time...

Good work. The only problem (a little one) I hear is the vocal seems to have too much highs here and there, and is being a little too dynamic. Definitely good voice tho. The drums sound solid, like how the kick sits in the mix alot.

Bowed guitars ... ebow ..... ??

Stratomaster ... you like using the unusual stuff don't you? I like that.

This song has a jazz/pop feel to it.

My first thought was that the drums are too hot in the mix. On second thought, I think I'd just like to hear the acoustic(s) a tad bit louder during the verses - works well during intro though. What kind of acoustic are you using? How did you record it?

Kudos to the drummer - nice job. Speaking of drums, they sound great.

Really like the bg vox on the word goodbye. Is there some synth along with the bg vox to "fatten" them?

1:46 (and elsewhere) - Don't care for the bg vox on "The sky is falling again". Sounds a little out of tune.

As far as the lead vox - I didn't have a problem with it.

Overall, enjoyed it.

Hey Strat,
Cooool man! Man your acoustics sound really nice. ..really warm and comfortable. The drums sound really nice here. Nice job recording them, they sit really nice. It sounds like those new mics came through for you. .....and damn Geddy:D , nice vocs! I like the verb setting that you used. ...very song appropriate. If i had to nit anything, it would be the light low end. Im listening here at work, so my monitors  arent to be trusted, but on these speakers, its just a touch thin. ...again, a nit.
Really nice stuff Strat. ....love those acoustics man, really nice.

......WHERE's THE SOLO???? ....would'a been nice in this one:)
