"Otherwise, I wonder if you have disabled ACPI in Windows. Intense sound cards like the Mwave needs ACPI turned off, and set to 'standard PC' so the PCI bus can isolate IRQ's for hardware correctly. This is the one that made ALL my problems with clicks and pops, and crashing go away."

anyone know how to do that? ha...i have no idea...lol

Device Manager->Computer, you'll see Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI), double click it and then choose "Update Driver". Choose "standard PC" from the list of drivers.

You will be prompted to reload all of your device drivers on your next bootup, and it is possible to hose windows during this process (though very rare).

You might also disable ACPI and APM (all power) options in your BIOS. Personally I think they do more harm than good.

Your first question to the forum after going to Standard PC will be this: "Why doesn't my computer turn itself off anymore?" Them's the breaks!

One spanner in the works is that if you do switch off APM and ACPI in Bios, Windows 2000 will not bootup. A fresh install may be the only way out.

Windows 98 also reacts very badly. It duplicates all the devices.

See the BIOS is the first point of contact for the OS. If the BIOS changes its config drastically, Windows actually thinks it's been installed on another computer, and will react according to the way it's been designed.

ACPI/APM polls the system regularly for idle states, and checks when the OS is free so it can move into power saving mode. With modern OSs like 2000 and XP, improved ACPI compliance means that the OS will keep reporting back its state to the BIOS. Obviously, at the time it is doing this reporting, the system basically has low resources for everything else (as BIOS-OS communication is usually very high priority).

oi..somebody help me out here.

every single time I restart windows, windows XP AUTOMATTICALLY REINSTALLS ACPI UNIOPROCCESSOR PC over "STANDARD PC"....i have no option even.

how the hell do i stop that!!!!!!

scratch that...after a few times i guess it got the point that i didnt want it..lol

but now - HOW in the hell do i set IRQs?! my Delta44 is on 3, but so is a USB controller....and i can find NOWHERE where it will let me change the IRQ's at... i cant edit them anywhere...and no, nothing in bios.

In XP if you're in ACPI PC it will not allow you to change IRQs. You're stuck.

Best to reinstall with ACPI disabled in BIOS and disable ACPI when doing new install. Press f5 when asks you to press f6, and it will offer you new options.
