"Dirtying up" too clean recordings

i've converted some of the tracks i'm recording just to see how they're turning up. i know these are prelims--no compression or any other "finishing" touches, but i've noticed that they're really clean. maybe too clean.

i've heard of bands like duran duran who recorded in digital, noticed it was too clean, then dumped it into an analog machine to give it some warmth.

anybody have any tips on giving our recording a not-too-clean sound? for example, i like the sound of radiohead's "planet telex" from the bends.
 
Have you tried the Tape Sim plugin in Sonar? I personally don't care for it, but then I lean towards clean recordings. Might work for you though.
 
Or maybe you can try Steinberg´s Magneto. It´s a cool DX plugin and approaches you a little to how would it sound your recording if it was on a 15 or 30 ips tape.
 
You didn't really say what the tracks are, but you could consider re-amping almost any signal- Try taking a clean aux out and run it through, say a Joemeek, etc., to a different track and mix to taste.-Richie

Cranesong Analog dither might be what you are after, $30...
maybe a Fatso Jr, over $1000
maybe something in between.
Try the cheapest thing 1st, the Cransong... same as used in the Cranesong Flamingo. Might be exactly what you are after.
 
One old trick to add some ambient warmth is to mic the room with a condensor mic whilst your song is playing through the speakers. Mix this track then sparingly back into the final mix.

Yeah, I was gonna mention that Vinyl program too. Doesn't that actually add scratches like on a vinyl record?
 
Oops, never mind, I just read the link. That program does a lot of dirtying. It's free if you give them your Email address. Screw that, I get enough BS already.
 
I've been screwing around with the demo version of PSP Vintage Warmer. I don't think it would "dirty" up your songs, but it could beef them up and add a little fuzz. Like a small demoral drip. Maybe that's what you mean, anyway.

It's pretty nice ($125). The demo cuts out every 30 seconds.
