Direct X Plugin Help!!

If you've got SF 8, you can use VST effects as well as DirectX effects. This is a fantastic site for effects and instruments:

http://www.kvraudio.com/

Here's another I just ran across that seems to have a decent selection of links:

http://www.users.bigpond.com/prodigalson/plugins.htm

If you have an earlier version of SF, you can still use the DX stuff, but you'll need a "wrapper" to run VST effects (SF doesn't use VST instruments by the way). I've used the free "lite" DX wrapper from Spin Audio before:

There may be better shareware/freeware wrappers out there though.

Good luck,
marcus

Thanks for the help man.. there seems to be a lot of plugins out there.. hard to know exactly which one is going to be right for each job. I suppose I'll figure it out one of these days.

yeah, there definitely are a lot. KVR has some user reviews which may help you sort things through. are you looking for anything in particular? some free stuff that has a pretty good reputation from what i've gathered are the "classic" series by Kjaerhus Audio (specifically the compressor) and the free ones from Digitalfishphones (i like the Blockfish compressor a lot). i also like Subtek's LoFi Plus (bit+sample reduction/waveshaper with delay), Land of Cockaigne's Little Duck (analog emulated filter), Sinus's FreeverbToo (reverb), and Elogoxa's Baxxpander (bass enhancer) to name a few. i think those are all VST effects. PSP has Pianoverb (tunable reverb emulating sympathetic piano string vibrations i think) which is free and Izotope has a vinyl simulator (clicks/scratches/fidelity/record warp settings) that's okay. those are both available as DX effects

keep in mind, you don't have to try them all! some are gems, i'm sure plenty others are just okay. i imagine you can find some opinions on this board too.

good luck,
marcus

yeah, hitsquad has a million different things in the Shareware Music Machine area (way more than just plug ins). check the limitations though. a lot of those programs are demo versions that will time out or limit functionality, and i'm pretty sure from experience that a lot don't have uninstall options. it can make your hard drive pretty messy if you go overboard like i have in the past :)
