Guhlenn, I did check out that Fostex and was tempted to get that instead of a PC (which I got last July- glad I did, too). I'm still tempted to get one, but I think it only has 16 bit/44.1khz recording (per gigabyte, whatever that means). I read about it on one of these forums where two guys each had one. They both seemed to like it, but were having trouble finding a way to record it to CD or hard drive, though. From what I can remember, one of them wrote to Fostex, and Fostex wrote back that it wasn't possible to do it digitally(?). I may have my facts screwed up because it's been a while since I read that, but I know they were having some kind of problem transferring digital data. Still, it sounds like a pretty good deal for around $1200 bucks. I didn't know about the ability to transfer 8 tracks via lightpipe though. Is lightpipe the same as optical? I'm still really interested in that Hoontech card. That's got optical I/Os but then again- what DOESN'T it have? I'm just leery of dealing out-of -country despite the fact that that is how Ola got his. That may be the only way he can get a decent soundcard. I'm afraid if something goes wrong with it, I'm gonna be waiting for a LONG time to get it repaired. Also, they are a pretty new company. Suppose they fold like Gadgetlabs? The Korean site also recommends that you deal with dealers who are in your country if there are any. There's one in the U.S. but they want $491 for it and every time I go their site, I get a PC warning that says the site is not trustworthy. Still, it looks like the coolest card in that price range.
As far as recording the drum kit, like I said before, I was using that Tascam 4 track tape machine out in the chicken coop. I only had four channels/four mikes running into two tracks with that. I figure six channels/six tracks should be a vast improvement over that. I've heard from someone who's musical opinion I respect very much, that it's possible to get a decent recording using only three mikes on a medium kit-- if you place them well. Remember, this is gonna be chicken coop recording.....so it aint gonna be perfect, anyway. ;-)
