Dou you want to go out of your mixer channel into the interface then back into the same channel? If so, you'll need a dedicated insert cable like this one-

Yes, my purpose is to use the mixer live, but record a few of the channels seperately, directed out like that, so still having the channels active in the mixer mix. So, what I need to do is buy the Stereo to 2 Mono like you pictured, and plug one of the monos into the interface input, and the other in....where? I have the Presonus Firepod if that helps with specs.

Just use the one click method (i.e. - plug in an unbalanced cable to the first "click"), then you can get the direct out without interrupting the signal to the rest of the mixer.

Direct out is different from INSERT on your channel strip of your mixer. The direct out is what you want to use if you want to send your signal to to a recording device, etc. Insert is for signal processors and you would use the TRS cable pictured above.

(1) The "First Click" method on the TRS Insert Jack with a 1/4-in TS instrument cable works fine (If you push it all the way in you'll silence the channel). What you get: Pre-Fader, PreEQ, pre-EFX signal (but post-trim)---i.e., the "dry" signal. A general advantage in using insert sends during live recording is that fader/EQ/InternalEFX adjustments for FOH will not directly affect the recorded signal.

(2) There's some confusion about the terms Insert-Out v. Direct-Out, even among manufacturers who make boards with both (and use the terms diferently for different configurations). For the sake of this post, a Direct Out is a channel-strip TS jack, in addition to the insert jack, capable of sending a post-trim-Fader-EQ-EFX signal for that channel---very much like a single-channel aux send. Post-routings mean that your recorded signal will be affected during FOH adjustments. Some boards let you set pre-post options for the signal routing on direct outs or insert sends, either in lieu of or in addition to having separate jacks for each.

Good luck,

You don't need an insert cable to go direct out, just get a mono plug and plug it in one click for direct out plug board monitoring, all the way in for direct out & no board monitoring. Use the insert cable for outboard gear like a compressor, eq, etc. It'll actually insert the device in-line to the channel strip by sending out the signal then returning it back into the channel.

You are right. I have a Soundcraft Spirit M Series mixer. Each channel has it's own, Direct Output Jack and an Insert jack. Then you have the Main Inserts as well as 4 Aux Sends and Returns. It's a great sounding mixer.

lol 3 years later but i am curious if the insert cable is plugged into the insert jack on the same channel then how do you control the input from the compressor and or efx or whatever is using the insert cable?

By turning the knobs...
