I have a line 6 FlextoneII with a direct out which i am plugging straight into my yamaha 2816, and the quality of the sound is amazing. My only problem is the humming and unwanted noise I am getting. I was thinking that i need a preamp even though i am using a direct out, and i thought it could also just be my amp. DOes anyone have any suggestions on what to do?

I had the same problem, turned out it was the Noise Gate on my V-amp...most modelers need to have the noise gate turned up a cut down the garbage. Not too much though, or it will clip notes.

Well, If the amp has one, it needs to be turned on or it will sound like garbage...at least that is how it is on my modelers and modeler/amps...

Some noise will always be there, but you shouldn't need a noise gate.

If it's a static kind of noise, then play around with the position of the amp and the *direction* of your guitar. You should notice that as you rotate around the noise gets louder or quiter. If you have a computer monitor in the room, get away from it or turn the guitar perpendicular.

If it's a "hum" kind of noise, it could be a grounding issue. Try the amp in differnet outlets...or try lifting the ground....or turn off other electrical appliances.

if i have my strat switch either at the top or at the bottom, i get that hiss.

Single coil hiss falls into the tolerable category for me, and I'd rather accept it than try to gate it out. If necessary, a gate or manual editing at mix time can get rid of anything that's audibly distracting.
