Direct Box 101

Hello all,

Personally speaking (and in Newbie general) it seems that Direct Boxes are a commonly misunderstood and perhaps under utilized piece of gear in live and recording situations.

With the varity of features and prices anywhere from $20.00 to well over $100.00, knowing if and when a direct box is needed and then choosing the right one to buy seems a daunting task.

I've created this thread in hopes that the voices of experience can offer some application specific suggestions, brand / cost / quality opinions and perhaps even a simplified Direct Box overview for all of us still in the dark.

Choosing is not too terribly dificult as they are usually sold for different instruments. I almost always like a miced amp over a DI but always trust your ears. What sounds good is good.

for bass nothing beats the Tech21 sansamp bass DI. you really dont need to mic the amp also unless you have a bass solo or anyhting.

Try some Mic'n and DI'n. Sometimes DI'n sounds great, and sometimes not so great. I have found that DI'n works on some guitar solo's, but on almost everythin else I get a better sound by Mic'n the amp.
