Direct Boxes

any preferences here, brand-wise?
I was looking at some Rolls DIs ( $30 ea. )
For that, I could get two of 'em, but I'd rather just pay full price for a Countryman if the Rolls suck.
Anyone have an experience/opinion on a good DI??

Rolls has got to be one of the shoddiest manufacturers around - within a week I went thru 3 MidiBuddys and the problems were all poor workmanship and QA. If they can't even get a simple midi pedal right, I can't imagine them getting anything else right either......

thanks, Bruce. That's exactly the kind of stuff I wanted to know ( having never dealt with or owned any Rolls stuff before ).

I'll steer clear of 'em.
 
i agree... i have a midi buddy that lasted about 4 yrs of pretty brutal abuse but the other guitar player in the band...his lasted about a week...it just stopped working.

I figure the poor hit and miss consistency really had us shying away from any other products by them.

I personally like the h&k redbox pro. I have used the cabinet simulator on more than one occassion and have had compliments on how clear and rich my tone was. I have never used it in a recording situation but Im guessing that mic'ing the amp still sounds better on tape.

I have never really used the direct box for just going direct to the board for acoustic,bass or anything else for that matter but Im guessing that it probably sounds decent. I paid 80us dollars for it brand new.

Countrymen ROCK!!!

Also, check for any with Jensen transformers. You can pretty much assume that if they bother to put a Jensen in it, they built it to last too!

The transformer IS what makes the difference in sound quality on DI boxes, and Jensen's are the BEST!

I was definitely considering the Countryman.
Price was the only thing holding me back.
I'll definitely check out the Red Boxes, too.
Is active THAT MUCH better than passive as far as DIs are concerned??
Just wondering....
