so i want to get the 35 dollar behringer direct box, just have a couple questions.
I have an audiophile card with no xlr inputs and the output to the direct box is xlr, what can i do here, what type of adapter would i need? What can i direct box be used for besides recording a clean guitar into the computer? Lastly i have a behringer vamp right now and i was thinking about just getting amp modeling software, any advice on this or what a great amp modeling software that has "killer" metal guitar tones, thanks sorry for all the quetsions

The direct box will turn your line level signal into a mic level signal. You will need a mic preamp to bring it back up to line level before you plug it into you audiophile card. I wouldn't bother.

A DI also does impedence conversion, so depending on the input impedence on the interface, this may or may not be important. Why not use the direct out of the Vamp instead? Can you bypass all the sims and effects and send just the clean, buffered signal out to the interface?

you're not going to get a "killer metal tone" out of eiher a DI box OR an amp modeller. the only way to get a real, convincing, kickass metal tone is a real ("killer") amp with a real mic in a real (preferably nice) room, and then stack track on top of track on top of track (which takes lots of practice and skill).

i use DI'd and modelled guitars all the time in my music.....but they always sound DI'd or modelled.......and they always pale in comparison to any tone i get from a mic in front of an amp. there's no substitute for the real thing.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news.....

cheers,
wade

thanks for the help but there were still unanswered questions, why would i need a mic preamp after using the direct box to put it into my card? Why dont i need to do this with the vamp, because its already a preamp? im trying to save money so would it be cheaper for me to sell my vamp, get a direct box and the other equipment necessary or just keep my vamp and use that as a direct box?

A preamp boost signal from mic level to line level. The v-amp's output is line level, so there is no need to boost it.

A direct box will change the signal from line level to mic level, you will have to change it back before going into you soundcard. (that would be why you would need the preamp.

If you are just recording guitar, you already have everything you need. A direct box would just complicate things and won't do you any good.

A Direct Box or D.I. (Direct Injection) is meant to match the Hi Impepance guitar signal to the low impedance mic input. It is not an "interface" to go in line instead of a mixer. It is designed to be used with a mixer. If you needed to send your guitar signal over a 100' snake, you would use a direct box to get it there. The Behri will work great for that, just use the pad if you are plugging straight into it, humbuckers can clip the input if you play too hard.

The V-Amp should have a line out that will interface properly (or close to it) with the line in of your audiophile soundcard.

Yes the V-Amp is a pre-amp (a guitar pre-amp).

If you are looking at the DI because you don't like the sound you are getting out of the V-Amp direct into the soundcard, then don't bother. It will not help. You could probably get better recordings out of a basic practice amp and mic through a half decent mixer than going direct with or without the V-Amp, or DI.
