Digital Recording

I am wanting to purchase a hard disc multitrack recorder, but I'm not sure what to get. I don't want to use a compter because I want something that is portable. Here are my needs:

- at least 4 simultaneous inputs at a time
- a hard drive or other media that will record for at least 30 minutes.
- rackmount would be great, needs to be portable
- under $300!

I want to record some original tunes and also record my family jamming in the basement!

I know that budget is tiny, but I'm just having fun! I've been looking at eBay, but there are too many my mind is going crazy. E-Mu Darwin, Akai, Fostex, Roland!

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yo Lance & Allen:

You left out the Yamaha 2816, and it's clone to some extent, the AW16 or the 4416.

All do 8 tracks at once with "16" tracks. Plenty there.

Good deals abound on all of the above if you look around.

For less money and less quality sound, you could go to the Yam MD8 -- a little less headroom, fairly good sound but not up to digital--but, you'll have "fun" with that unit too.

With the digital Yams, you can do the whole thing and burn your CD in the digital domain.

Learning curve? Yes. But, that's true with any of the other units you mentioned.

Green Hornet:D :p :D
