I have a 4 track now, and im thinking about getting a Fostex mr-8 4 track, the red one. Has everything I want, but I'm gonna wait on it a little. Has anyone worked with this or something similar? I hope they keep making outboard things like these, because I prefer sitting in front of the actual thing rather than using some computer software. Plus, it's cheaper. Do you think things like this and simple 4 track tape recorders will always be manufactured?

I think cassettes will go the way of the victrola.Optical media is much cheaper to manufacture these days,and they have no moving parts. I'm sure 4 track stuff will always be available in some format.They're cheap and easy to use,and a great "sketch pad" type of thing. I,myself prefer stand alone recorders as opposed to computer based recording,but that's just my preference.There's some powerful recording softwear out there,just ask any Pro Tools user.
The type of music that I do would rarely require cut and paste ability,and I prefer a performance based session.
I know someone who uses the Fostex machine that you mentioned,and he gets good results with it.

i own a mr8 as well, it's as cool as a mule which in dave's world means: it kicks ass! but seriously, it's idiot proof, very easy to use, intuitive, has alot of features for the $$. the only bad part about it is that it uses CF media as it's storage medium which can get pricey, especially for the high grade cf cards which run at the higher speeds the mr8 needs to record on. the preamps on this thing suck too, so you migh want to look into getting a yamaha mixer or some kind of rackmount pre's for the mics. other than that, it's a great little box for $300. hell, you can probably find it cheaper than that if you snoop around enough =)
