well i have looked and looked and looked but i have yet to find out how to do this. I want to buy a digital mixer, in particular a tascam dm-24. but i was wondering if i could hook up that mixer to my computer without a digital multi-track recorder. i have recorded before at a studio where they used a dm-24 and there was no multi-track anywhere. maybe there is some sort of pc card or something. and im not talking about a 2 channel input sound card or anything like that. it was synced with the computer and recorded right on the computer, all the tracks. if you guys have any idea that would be awesome thanks.

Sure, you just need the appropriate card for the DM24 and a corresponding card for your computer. There are a few different options for the DM24, along with MIDI for control surface/automation stuff.

im sorry im pretty new. thats great info but could you kind of help me out like with which cards are you talking about. and couldnt i use the dm24 for a control surface?

The dm24 is the control surface but the automation is stored in the computer and they talk to each other via midi.
I don't know what i/o options you have with a dm 24. The normal ones are ADAT, AES/EBU, TDIF, and MADI. You would just have to decide which one when you buy the dm24. Once you have decided, you get the I/O cards for the dm24 and the corresponding ones for the computer. Then you just hook them up. There isn't much more to it than that. The different interfaces have pros and cons, you will have to research them to find out which one is for you.

thanks a lot. i was researching the cards on a few websites but what i cannot seem to find a corresponding one for my computer. like i cannot find an adat card for my computer.

dear 1 to nth degree. i know this wont win me any friends but imho digital mixers are a huge waste of money. and i would never buy one.
full of smt, difficult to service, proprietary architectures.
