Digital converter?

I am planning to buy a Cakewalk Pyro 5 to use to burn audio tapes to CD. Someone told me that in order to get good results I need to buy a digital converter to convert the audio signal to digital before it goes in to my computer. I've used Easy CD Creator without a digital converter without problem, and wonder if I will gain noticeable improvement in quality with a digital converter. I never even heard of one until yesterday.

Anyone know anything about this?

I'm sure it won't.
In your case the computer already acts as a digital converter. Plus the sound quality of an audio tape can not possibly be noticably improved. It's only audio tape.

your soundcard's line in is a digital converter. its not a good one, but i doubt you'll notice anything staggeringly better from cassette (especially since you're probably gonna want to buy a $100 one, which won't be a huge step up anyway)

Paganinio and Treymonfauntre: Thanks so much for your replies. I'm poised to buy a Mbox converter for $299 (on sale from $449.) I keep seeking advice from people with more experience than I have, and generally speaking I have been told that having a good converter with a USB connection will noticeably improve the sound quality of the CD. I'm never sure when I'm being sold a line. but it does seem like I want to move up to a Cakewalk Sonar or Pro Tool in order to have more control over how I edit and mix the tapes.

I really appreciate any imput that I can get...

if you really want a dramatic step up in terms of great "analog-ish" sound, great soundstage/imaging and superb construction...the mytek products are outstanding. I just bought the mytek stereo 192 myself, but there are several other products. They arent cheap, but I figgered if you were talking about protools, you had some dough. Lavry is another good name in the adc realm....also the benchmark ADC1 is getting good reviews. (though to me it sounds more sterile, not as warm and fuzzy. )
I can get the best price around for the mytek should you ever want one. (no im not a dealer, just a customer who knows a dealer and gets good deals )

also... the MAudio 24/96 is a bit perfect card that many folks have used to do transfers. www.mytekdigital.com (for the mytek products)
