so im running a presonus firepod to my laptop which has a gig of ram, a pentium 4 2.4ghz processor and im running windows XP. heres my problem: im getting alot of digital clicks during playback, i know its not in the files because when i do a mixdown theyre not there. any suggestions?

yeah my buffers are up to the max. funny thing is though that i tried listening to the tracks through my crappy laptop sound card and there were no clicks whatsoever. now i know the presonus firepod is way better than my laptop card (or at least it better be for what i paid for it!). which leads me to believe that it might be because of the firewire connection as opposed to an internal device. any thoughts or suggestions?

so heres where i am now: i raised the latency settings to 10 ms on the firepod and it seemed to do the trick for the most part. heres the problem with this though. now that i raised the latency im getting that "chorus" effect while monitoring tracks as they go in. IS THERE A HAPPY MEDIUM!?!?!?!?!?

If you are monitoring directly off of the Firepod, you need to turn off monitoring in Cubase.

Unfortunately, I don't use a Firepod so I can't help with it's control panel or monitoring mixer.

As far as CubaseSX/Nuendo .... File > Preferences > VST .... set Auto monitoring to "manual".
Then just don't click on the little monitor speaker for the inputs/tracks.

Read up on direct monitoring in the Cubase manual/help files and any monitoring information included with the Firepod.

ok got it. heres my question though, i cant control monitoring levels in cubase if i monitor directly from the firepod, will i need an external mixer to do this? it would seem that for some reason the firepod does not support ASIO direct monitoring. sorry for all the lame questions, you gotta bare with me im still really new to digital recording, i had the 16 track tape down, ITS ALL SO DAMN NEW TO ME!!!!!!!!!

Well, you don't really need to hear the input levels via Cubase. Just watch the input meters and make sure you aren't clipping (hitting 0db). Adjust you input levels so that you peak at around -9 to -6 db. You can even peak lower than that and still have decent dynamic range.
Adjust your input levels via the gain staging on the Firepod.

Don't sweat the small stuff. Give it time and it'll all be clear.
May seem clear as mud right now but you'll get the hang of it.

If you are monitoring through the firepod - you should be able to see where the tracks are hitting db wise in the software - and at the same time hear it through your monitors.

Is this not the case for you? Not sure what the problem is...

BTW - 10ms seems a little dissapointing. I just got a firepod and was hoping to be ~4 on my centrino laptop. Maybe an unrealistic expectation.
