Digital Audio Weirdness

I have a SoundBlaster PCI 512 card, in a Compaq system with a 1.1 GHz celeron, 512 MB RAM, and WinXP-H.

My problem is that when I record high-frequency sounds, like cymbals, I get this nasty sizzle in the audio. The best way I can describe it is that it's something like that gurgly sound a person's voice can get when some phlegm gets caught in their throat.

Any ideas?
 
Sounds like you're overloading the mic, or the mic inputs on the s/c......

You should consider a good front-end, a decent mic, mic pre, and while you're at it, if you're serious about recording, get yourself a recording s/c instead of a gamer card.
 
Right now I have a Mackie 1402 board, and a Rode NT-1 condenser mic I'm using. So perhaps the issue is more with the interface, it seems. Any recommendations for a good card or interface in the $100-150US range?
 
OR....

E-MU 0404.... i woudl swing either way as they are both great cards as i have come to learn. I played with one of the e-mu's the other week and they are pretty cool for 99 bucks.
