I see this question comes up a lot but I'm suck a technophobe newbie I can't figure out the answer from the replies. I got a Boss BR532 digital recorder the other day, and I have the cable to plug the 4 track into my computer but I don't know hole in the computer I'm supposed to plug it into or how to get the computer to recognise that it's hooked up to the 4track.

I gather that it's supposed to connect to the soundcard - does that mean I pull out the cable for the speakers and stick the 4track cable in there?

Do I need any particular software/drivers etc for the computer to recognise the digital recorder?

I'm sorry if this sounds idiotic, but I'm desperate!!

Eternally grateful for any help,
Seán

Do you have a way to get the sounds off the digital card in the Boss? It's much quicker if you can do this. If not, you need to plug the out from the Boss to an in on your soundcard...Not the speakers. It will work faster if you have a card reader for the card in it though.

The 4track records onto smartmedia cards, but I don't have a reader for them unfortunately. As for plugging the 4track into an in in the soundcard, I've tried plugging the cable into every hole in the back of the computer that it will fit (there are several), and I get no response from the computer. Do I need some sort of software that I don't have, are am I missing some obvious step?

Oh, and the soundcard is a soundblaster.
Thanks again,

You probably need to go into the control panel for the card, lower right of the screen, and make sure in the properties it is recognizing input sounds from the source you are plugging into. Sometimes they have the mute checked, or the slider is turned down.

Also, having teh same 4-track, if you can get a card reader, you will be much happier. It is quicker, and easier to synch up tracks that way. They are relatively inexpensive anymore, and worth it.

Here is just one card reader I found....

Thanks, I didn't realise they were that cheap - I might get one. In the meantime I'll look into the soundcard properties. When you're transferring information from 4track to computer via cable, are you transferring a file as saved onto the flashcard, or is the song that's being played on the 4track being relayed and recorded onto the computer?

Its being relayed and recorded onto the computer using your soundblasters ad/da convertors..which is/will compromise your sound quality even furthur.
If you get that card reader..not only will you not have to sit thru every song being recorded onto your PC..you can just import the files on your card as how it was recorded in your boss..thus losing no quality that the boss has recorded in

Sounds like it's got to be the card reader then. Thanks guys.
