i own a digidesign 003. what should i get next? i was told the next item should be a preamp especially a Universal 610. any suggestions under $1500. then a good mic. i have an AKG C3000B & cheap drum mics that i cannot make sound good(vocal). wanting to record drum, guitar, vocal, bass rock band.

there are many pros here who can offer you great advice from experience,,,

i'm only chiming in cos i have a 003,but my order of purchase was.

firepod...thats how i started

mics <nt1a 2xsm81 sm58 akg d112 etc> untill i felt i had a set that i could work with

003 -upgrade from firepod

focusrite octopre, gives me 12 ins in total.

the next purhase for you depends entirely on your needs...

if you have bad vocal recordings,,,maybe invest in a nice vocal mic,

but one thing that people always said to me was

dont upgrade thinking it will make your mixes sound better.......upgrade because you've fulfilled the potential of your gear..

i don't know your current abilites and skills,,but time invested with what you have is much better than money invested in gear you might not use to it's full potential.

hope that helps :)

thanks for your reply steenamaroo. i also started w/a firefod and had a good time using it. I used it w/MAGIX (cheap, but worked) i've had the 003 for about two months now and invest about 20hrs a week messing w/it. i'll have many ?'s

cool,,,sounds good...

maybe post up some of your mixes if you have some...

with the preamp thing,,at this stage it kinda seems like theres not a whole lot of point taking baby steps..

most people seem to recommend makin the most of what you have, untill you can pick up something REALLY nice and really worth the upgrade....

again,,maybe someone will chime in to confirm or oppose that?

if you're wanting to upgrade mics, general opinion seems to be that you can never have enough. and there are a LOT of recommendation threads around here...

this is where i got the info that lead me to pick up a d112 for bass drum<mainly> and the 81s.

if you've got 1500 to spend, I'd use it on room treatment. It can make a world of a difference.

why buy pres when the 003 has them, I'm sure they are fine.

in my case i wanted at least 8 simultaneous pres...

if anything though,,i'm trying to give this chap a reason why he shouldn't upgrade his pres...

that said,,if he's recording a 'drum, guitar, vocal and bass' rock band,,there's a good chance he'll need more than the four included pres for drums alone......

I agree completely, Spend the money treating the room. Because the pres on the 003 are cool does not color the sound. So get your room treated properly and then go from there and get you a pre, because the akg mic you have is a good mic, I used it for years and then I got the NT1A. Room treatment is the major step that a lot of people miss.

Pick up a Behringer ADA8000 for $200, that'll give you a total of 12 decent pres and four line inputs. Spend the rest on mics, cables, and whatever else you'll need. Audio Technica and Electro Voice make some kickass mics for fairly cheap.
