Digi001 confusion

channels 1-4 have XLR mic pres and seperate 1/4" channel inserts on the back. Is that what I'm looking for?

yeah, I suppose that would work... you'd have to choose you cables carefully methinks... I'm trying to think. Inserts are usual TRS so that you can return to the insert. I'd see if you could get a copy of the manual online.

That would leave you 4 analog in's for your other stuff (is that enough? I suppose it is really).

just checked the manual... a straight mono cable is used and by pushing it all the way in you isolate it from the master channel. So you're right;)

I agree... but I've struggled to find anything that comes with 8 mic pre's and 2 times ADAT outputs. I'd be interested in alternatives myself because I'm using the mic pre's in my Behringer DDX3216 and if I had an alternative to the ADA8000 then I'v be able to bypass the DDX3216 pre's altogether:)

For the price, I haven't seen it Synk. I'd be real tempted to go with one of the M-Audio or Presonus pre's. Then again, I don't know how much you'd gain for the difference in cash.

I know the hard core studio guys would frown on any multi-channel pre under $1000...the Behringer's generally get good reviews, but the reviews always seem to have the phrase "for the money". My personal dream rig right now is the M-Audio Project Mix with one of the aforemention multichannel preamps.

Dream Rig is probably an overstatement, a realistic dream rig compared to a HD3 system with an ICON control surface.

M-Audio Project Mix

hmmm... nice little box there... and compatable with Sonar too... ... ... and can also use the ADAT lightpipe instead of firewire it seems...

After spending some time today in the drum forum, I'm really starting to think we can begin with just the Digi002 and get some decent recordings using just four mics - 2 overheads in stereo, kick and snare. And if we need to upgrade later to have more inputs, we always can since the Digi002 allows for it.

And all we would need is a kick mic, as we already have an SM-57 and two nice condensers.

What do you all think?

BTW... thanks a million for all the help guys!

yep... this is where I'm coming from... nice and simple

I'd still consider the HA4700 headphone amp. In Sonar, I create a stereo bus for each of us (we're a four piece) and then I create a new send in each track for each of the (what I call) monitor busses. I've expanded my RME sound card so that it has eight analog outputs and I route the monitor busses to a stereo pair (1,2 - 3,4 - 5,6 - 7,8). That then allows me to send different mixes to each person via the front connections on the HA4700.

I know that the HA4700 is a Behringer item but you are only using it to monitor during tracking and is not used in the signal chain at all. For that reason I'd say it's better than the Presonus because of th additional inputs on the front.

does that make any sense?

Dude, I'd seriously look at the M-Audio Project Mix IO over the Digi 002. It costs less and has 8 XLR's instead of 4. Just my opinion.

Just been browsing the M-Audio site and came across this - Octane

you learn something every day... I suppose I should go for this in the future rather than the ADA8000?

Synkrotron - I just checked the specs on the HA4700... that's a serious headphone amp! I think we'll be happy as long as we get something with enough headroom, which from reading, it sounds like the cheap ART one does not. That's why I put the Presonus one... but I could definitely be swayed either way.

sixways - the Project Mix I/O looks cool, but it's more expensive than the Digi002 rack, which is the one I want, not the one with the mixer. And it doesn't work with Pro Tools LE, correct? And it doesn't come with Pro Tools M-Powered. I wonder how the mic pres compare to the Digi002?

I would like to recommend to you though, before you order anything, check out www.bhphotovideo.com. Those guys are waaaay cheaper than anyone else I have seen on most things. You'll have to be emailed or call for a price, but they're deeply discounted.

Keep in mind on the Focusrite Octopre, you'll still have to buy the ADAT out, its not included. So add another $200 to the price.

Project Mix from B&H: ProjectMix I/O Control Surface is 1,129.95

Protools M-Powered from B&H: $249

M-Audio Octane from B&H: $499

Grand Total: $1,877.95

The 002r with the Plug-in Bundle is $400 less than this whole set-up, but you don't have 8 XLR's or the Octane. Knock the Octane out, and you still come up cheaper.

bubbagump - I know what you're saying... but this is really our other guitar player's baby... and he wants to stick to ProTools. What do you use?

I personally use N-track (the DAW everyone loves to pick on for whatever reason) and an EMU 1820M interface. But really, iIwould just level with the guy. if money is not an object, sure, go PT. But really, I think you can get much more for your money else where... but if it ain't your thing and you can't get him to bite... well... there are a lot of good suggestions here.
