Hello,
I am looking to increase my Digi001 inputs from 8 to 16 using a preamp with adat out. What exactly is the most economical way to go? What cables do I need? I have no experience working with ADAT. Also, where on the Digi 001 interface are the adat inputs? Are they on the PCI card maybe?

the cheapest crap, from the worst company, enjoy :)
if you can spend more, DO!

and use, the light pipe is on the back of the pci card, it's about the size of a phone jack.
the one that doesn’t emit light when the computer is on is the input.

this one is a little better

other companys have this same crap, no actual need to buy from musicians friend if you don't want to.

The M-Audio Octane is another good choice that's a little more than the behri. Despite the Behri rep, this unit is actually pretty damn good, especially if you use it just as a converter instead of a pre/converter.

That behringer unit looks like the way to go. Does anybody know where I can find a used one? I tried fleabay....no dice. Are these things used a lot?

Also, would I need to get some kind of word clock to sync the behringer and digi001?

You might have a hard time finding a used one. When they get much older than a year folks just throw them away. And no, you wouldn't need any kind of external clocking to sync the two. The clock signal is embedded in the digital stream. You'd just set the 001 to slave to the incoming Lightpipe signal.
