Slowing becoming un-noob.
What are the main differences. Are there any big differences, besides basic design?

The 002's are a lot cheaper than the 003's. So I'm considering the 002 to save money. And if there isn't that much difference, then I don't see why not.

Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks!

I just dove in and bought the 003 rack for 929 bucks "open box". I got it from Unique Squared, a certified Digidesign dealer, so I had a little less skepticism with the open box.

002's were tempting because of the dropping price point. I think would be the main deciding factor for me personally, how much is cost. If I were to find an 002 at a price I couldn't resist I'd get it but I stuck it out and bought the 003. My decision was made figuring, with such a big investment(for me) I should try to do it right. Hopefully that was the right decision.
With the Digidesign 003, the latest generation of Pro Tools LE interfaces has arrived! Building on the success of the hugely successful 002, the 003 takes all the built-in functionality of its predecessor and ups the ante with redesigned preamps and superior A/D conversion, plus a jog/shuttle wheel allows for easily moving through the session timeline. -Sweetwater.com
The preamps are supposed to be improved and the A/D is also supposed to be improved. Before I make real judgment's I should say that I haven't used the 002 so my comparison wouldn't help. Though I do say that I am beginning to like pro tools and my new interface. The pre's work, I like the monitoring options, and adat expandability. The A/D's work appropriately enough for my ears to not hear any real difference. If anything I'd say the audio comes through a bit cleaner than my Motu 8pre on playback. But that could be a series of things and I have not done any side by side tests, so take that with a grain of salt.

My impression is a good one, and still a first impression. I've had the 003 rack for almost a month now probably. But have had good results with the hardware. Pro tools is still getting used to but that was assumed.

Thumbs up for both rack interfaces.:D

Good luck with whatever you choose, digidesign or not.

Alright, thanks. That helps. The whole better converters is what gets to me most. If I got it I wouldn't be using the preamps, but the converters, I sure would of course.

I'll just suck it up for the 003.
Although it said something about the jog wheel...it must not be talking about the rack 003.

Which one did you get? The rack or non-rack version?

I have the 002 and use an Aurora 8 for all AD/DA conversion thru the optical port on the 002.

Before getting the Aurora I had only the 002 and considered the 003, Black Lion Mod for the 002, Apogee Rosetta & the Aurora.

After doing a few months of research I went with the Aurora 8 though I'd imagine the Rosetta would be pretty damn close.

There's a huge difference to my ears with the Aurora compared to the 002. My understanding is that the AD/DA on the 003 is just slightly improved from the 002.

I went with the Aurora because I can expand it to ProTools HD or any other system in the future.

Before buying ask yourself why you're choosing Pro Tools as well. You can do damn near the same thing with Logic, Sonar, etc and save the cost of the dongle.

Ok, here's a question. Does the 002 only support up to a certain version of PT? Kind of like how the Digi001 only supports up to LE 6.X, or can you use the 002 with 7.4?

So what's this Aurora thing? You can expand it with to protools HD? Is it digidesign?

You can, but you need a Digi compatible interface to do so, for example like Nuemes is using. He's using his 002 as the interface, but using the Aurora for the converter. Lots of people use Lynx and Apogee products for conversion with their Digi setups because the conversion is better than Digi's. The Aurora can also use a card that allows it to connect directly with Digi HD systems.

Of course, a lot of people don't use Protools and Lynx provides other options for them.

I am running 7.4 with a Digi 002 rack perfectly. On Windows to boot! So at this point, there is no limitation on the software version.

Ahhh alright. Makes sense. So I Could go with the digi002 and then just use that Aurora deal for the conversion.

I'm still leaning towards the 003. I think it'll convert decently enough for my needs, and then I could upgrade later in the future.

Thanks for the input though. Good to know.

The 003 makes sense if you know you'll stick with Pro Tools LE for quite a few years - you won't need to upgrade the 003 in order to keep up with new versions of PTLE software for a few years.

However, if you know you have good ears, or people have told you that you do, you'll be itching for a better AD/DA within a year or so once you realize that it's nothing you're doing wrong that's keeping you from getting the sound you want.

I bought high end preamps, expensive mics, better monitors, software compressors & EQ before taking the plunge for good AD/DA. Only then could I get the kick, bass and guitars to sit in a mix without mud.

A lot of folks will argue that a good mix can be done on an 002 and I don't disagree; but much better can be done with a decent outboard AD/DA.
