I'm considering a PC based recording rig and was hoping to get some practical comments and observations on Digidesign's Digi 001 and MOTU's 828....I've been to both their sites and have learned that the 001 is not currently designed for use with Windows XP....I've also read that the 828 comes with software that will run on XP but uses a "fire wire" connection....as far as I've learned "fire wire" is something used on Mac's....so now I'm a little confused:rolleyes: ....any help would be appreciated!

true, the 828 IS a firewire unit. All newer Mac do have this and now some PC's as well. Otherwise, a PCI firewire card can be had. I use that particular setup in a PC for some video editing.

I have not personally used the 828, so I cannot offer opinions. I do use the Digi001, however and I like it alot.

I think firewire is the way to go, I really do, I am just not sure what PC based software works well with the 828. Logic, I would guess. but logic looks like a bitch to learn.

Well, good luck and if you have Digi 001 questions, feel free to ask.

hey

looks like u r not so tech savvy, if true, u r better off with Digi001 - it has all you need out of the box.

I've also looked at the MOTU828 and thought that it is really geared to Macheads.

As to Windows Xp, ask any of your friends to install Win98 SE on your system, should be a breeze.

hope this helps,

I love the Digi 001, but I also think Firewire is killer. On most PCs you will need a firewire card to use the 828, but that's not necessarily a bad thing, and they're very useful and cheap.

The specs and features on the Digi001 and the 828 are incredibly similar, as the 828 was basically created as a direct response to the 001. They have the same number of ins and outs in the digital and analog realm, the same number of mic pres, the same controls.

The only other differences are included software: the 828 does not include PC workstation software, it only includes AudioDesk for the Mac, so you would have to buy a separate program like logic, cubase, etc. However, the 828 includes a better driver set (ASIO/WDM/wave) and the Digi001 only includes wave drivers.

Hey thanks Clark, corduroy5 & Charger!....I appreciate your replies! Right now I'm leaning towards the 001 system but I'm gonna see if I can run it on XP....since I made this post someone suggested that it's possible that it will run but just hasn't been "officially" sanctioned for use on XP so Digidesign can't yet say as much...

Clark: As I get deeper into this you may be hearing from me:D ....thanks for your offer!

...oh yeah, I almost forgot....with so much depending on the quality of the A/D converters...any thoughts on the quality of the ones that come with either of these units?

I know that PTle is being beta tested for XP...I have not heard of anyone running it "unofficially"

I guess Digi had a demo of it running at NAMM, so it would seem to me to be close. Close being...????

As far as the converters on the 001, I would say they fall middle of the road. Obviously the whole package is geared to the home user. In my mind the weakest links are the two pre's. They work fine, but lack the sparkle of a nicer outboard pre.

I wish I could comment on the 828. I know there were a couple people on this board who picked one up...I hope we hear from them!

Again, good luck...

Hows it goin?
I have only used the 828 and that was with a mac and is what I hope to get for my mac, so i cant really comemt on it for use with PC's as I havent used one with PC's!
But with mac the 828 works very well and one of my friends Dad's uses one in his studio and was saying that he could get 10 inputs into it instead of the 8 I dunno how bu he knows his stuff so!

On thing to keep in mind with any MOTU product, their support is non existant. The stuff sounds good, but don't ever plan on getting any help.

I own Digi 001, and it is awesome.... Like someone above said.. everything you need is in the box.... if ya can't run it on XP.. get rid of the XP and go to Windows ME

You don't need that XP shit....

Digi Rules....

Well, the company are a bunch of assholes, but there products rule :)

Support from either company is non existant I would say!
But Whats the chance of needing support any way?
U have got this place! :D

Thanks everyone for the continuing input on this!

Clark: I tried d/ling the "free" ProTools software and it would not load so I'm gonna figure that it's NOT gonna be compatible:mad: ...but I haven't given up yet....I do have some more questions for you though...
1) If you have monitors connected to the monitor out on the 001 does the playback from your PC play back through the monitors ....and/or with or without the input sound? (maybe a silly question but what a bummer it would be to find out otherwise after I bought the thing!)
2) Do you have any idea how the converters in the 001 compare with the ones that come in the "stand alone " units....such as the AKAI DPS 16 or Roland or Korg units?...are they all "middle of the road"?
3) What is meant by "effects plug ins are supported"?....does the 001 come with effects or do you have to add them afterwards?....or both?

VOXVENDER: Thanks for stopping by....I listened to your tunes and thought they were GREAT!.....Where the samples you had posted at your site all done with the 001?....I liked the sound quality just fine....BTW how'd you do the drums?

c-r-a-z-y and petimar: Thanks for the replies....in reference to c-r-a-z-y'-s comment about HR: that's why I figured I'd post my questions here....hoping to hear from folks who've actually used the stuff in the real world!

MAC2,

I would spend some SERIOUS time reading the forum of at Digidesign. And absolutely read the compatability documents they provide. They key to smooth sailing with the Digi is following that doc and suggestions of people over there.

The fact the PTFree did not work, while probably disheartening, is not the end of the world. PTFree is buggy as hell...i couldn't get it to work on the first PC I tried, but later put the 001 on it and PT worked beautifully...because it DID meet compatability requirements.

1. Yes, you can direct PC sounds throught the 001. I choose not to in most instances, but you certainly can.

2. Sorry man, I have NO expereince with the desktop recorders... they seem to get some rave reviews, by people that are paid to give rave reviews. Can't help you there.

3. there are some Digi rack plugins included and I believe you get a deal on Digiverb as well.

Good luck...and I am sure VOXVENDOR can pick up the pieces I left out.
