This is a two part question.
What I've read about the Digi-001 has all been good. Just wondered about any feedback from the greatest minds of this generation as to it's pro's and cons...any take will do.

Also, to run such an animal, they suggest various PC and Mac considerations. I, in my finite wisdom, purchased a Power Mac 7200/90 some years ago (not knowing where my adventures would take me) and had pretty much given up on the option of improving on that vs. a new computer.
But wait! I found out about an upgrade called the Crescendo from a company called Sonnet that will convert my Mac up to G3 or even G4 status. Is anyone familiar with this and any reprecussions of said upgrade on its own AND with the Digi-001? Thanks

im running the 001 on my mac and it works great.

im usingh a 7300 thiat i ugraded to a g4.the sonnetts arent worth the money, formuch cheaper youm could get a joecard or xlr8 motherboard instead.

at this point im telling you DONT upgrade, instead buy a new machine.by the time youll have fixed up your 7200 to run pro tools youll have spent ednopugh to buy a new machime, and as well, youd have less performance with the upgrade sincew your systems bus speed would function as a bottleneck.

in otherwords128 mb ram for a 7200-$400
g3 500 upgrade card(or g4 400)-$400

then youll also need at least a 7200 rpm hardirve to record onto.on the model you haqve thatll need to be external.the best is a 10,000 rpm scsi- BLAH BLAH BLAH_

what im sayin is that in the end a new g4 is between $200-$500 more, or less if you buy used.and with a new g4 youll have more power and more stability as there wont be a 50mhz system bus bottleneck.

if you get the 001be forwarned that digidesign sucks(as a company)-and there are issues with running othersound apps through the interface-

if you have the $$$ a better combo would be a motu 2408 with cubase using a mackie for the pre amps(unless you'd want to get sometrhing better)

as for upgrades BE SURE to check the user database here-
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com

cause you could have "issues" with stability etc.....

also dont get a newertech card because theyve gone out of business.this means no os 10 drivers-thats bad

MOTU 2408 + Digital Performer

That's very true. I personally think that a potentially better combo would be the 2408 + Digital Performer. That's the one I chose for my setup. At least you're all in the Motu family and there are no issues of compatibility.

As far the 001, I spent the better part of one year researching it and the Motu gear/software, and had made up my mind to go with the 001, until someone pointed out that after you shell out all the money for the computer, peripherals and interface, you are stuck with 24 tracks, never ever able to upgrade. Besides, you cannot chain two 001's to increase your I/O's. MOTU however does not put an aritificial limit on their tracks and you can chain as many as three I/O interfaces to get as much as 72 inputs and outputs with three 2408's or mixing and matching MOTU's various I/O combinations.

I can't tell you about upgrades, but if you are faced with having to buy a new computer, although I am not an expert, I am told buy a Mac. It is the computer of choice for digital audio. My work PC crashes three to four times a day some days just running WordPerfect. I can't imagine this machine handling the CPU loads of digital audio without stopping dead in its tracks. Anyway, there are additional issues with a PC if you go with 001. Also, Digital Performer is MAC compatible only.

That's my two cents. Hope it helps.
