Digging Around

Okay, here's the issue. I'm digging around, trying to figure out the best way to start. What are the best programs to start with, but will still allow growth? Is there a good/better/best way to go? Is it best to start by recording through a computer or through a system? What's the best program/system for editing if you're just starting out? *head to desk* I have so many questions. I tried reading through the webpages, but I'm not as far as figuring things out with an experimental basis yet, I'm just trying to figure out what it'll take, what the best route is, and how much money it's going to take to start up, and those pages gave me insight, but also left me with more questions.

Okay, so I sound like I know nothing. Close to. But here's where I'm at:
I have a computer already, so it seems more sensible to use it and get the right programs rather than buying an external system and then all the stuff to go with it. Plus, I'm not planning to record an entire band, so mobility of my PC isn't a foreseeable issue at this point.

I know I'll need a better mic than the thing which came with my computer, and probably a better soundcard. That's a given, and I feel far more comfortable with figuring that part out without a heap of trouble. I know there are "best bets" out there, but I can handle asking around on that one.

Some people have recommended downloadable programs that will allow me to record and edit, but I'm concerned about the quality. Is it better to buy the proper software, or use a program that can be downloaded? Although free is good, you get what you pay for. Is that true here?

I've also been told that Macs have better sound quality, and from others that it shouldn't make a big difference if you have the right programs. I don't have a Mac, and would, of course, prefer not having to buy a new PC, but what are the pros and cons? Should I look into switching over in the future or is that just nonsense?

Once you have some products in mind, the search feature here is great for turning up opinions on specific pieces of gear.

No, I don't believe that Macs are necessarily better for recording. If you have a good soundcard, good upfront equipment (instruments, mics, preamps, etc.), and good monitors, you'll do just fine.

Thanks so much. I'm reading through, and it's helping me out a ton. I still have some things to think out, but then that'd be the case regardless.

And I don't care for Macs, so it's great to hear that it isn't necessarily the best option.

and not having to buy a MAC will save you tons to spend on gear...

someone once told me if you can't get a good sound w/ newb programs, you won't be able to w/ programs that cost more money....that's pretty good advice.....if you tell us what programs have been recommended I can try to help you more
