I have a roland electric drumset with the TD-8 sound module, and my friend has a Boss 8-track recording module thingy. He and i were thinking but not knowing how, if he were to record guitar riffs onto that thing and then stucture them into a song of sorts, and if he passed the Boss recorder thing onto me how could I layer my drums overtop of his guitar riffs/songs. because I live half an hour away so jamming in my garage is diffcult, because i live in a condo.
Im not sure if this can be done or what he or myself should buy to make this easier, so any suggestions would be much appreciated.
again if there are any programs for a laptop, or any equipment i should get to make this process easier please tell me. im sorry i don't know the exact model of the boss recorder thing and i am trying to put this into much detail as i can. again I will be greatful for any tips or suggestions of any sort anyone may have. ill take what i can get and then go from there.
thanks

I'm not going to open this up much, but if you're planning on passing it around as you described, I would definately lay the drum tracks down before the guitar parts.

you're saying you want to have him record a guitar part then send it to you to add drums to with a drum machine correct?

the flaw in this is that without doing the drums first it will be near impossible to lay drums on top of the guitar as i doubt anyone can just play at a steady rock solid tempo on guitar. it will go off beat in no more than 2 measures i guarantee :)

you could try a click track, or just make sure he plays to a very basic groove and then go back and elaborate on the drums.. or even a simple metronome could do it.

other than that you should be able to go direct out from the electric drumset to the 8-track. i'm not familiar with electric drumsets so that's about all i can say on that.. i've never dealt with them in any way.

as far as the guitar.. if you're worried about sound quality theres a ton of threads on this forum.. the subject of recording electric guitars could fill volumes. the main thing is though to use a microphone.. a shure SM57 isn't a bad choice at all for that and they can be had for under $100 US.
