What are some different styles of techno music?
What should one look for in that style that would make it different?

I've heard some tehcno tracks I liked but they always had some hiphop elements in them. What would you call a techno track that borders on being a hiphop beat? A beat?? :D

Naw... Seriously because I wanna do some techno shit but I want it to bang more like hippa to the hoppa. If somebody has some examples post em up.

...

drum and bass
and jungle

use alot of hip-hop influence

peep

Dieslboy
AK47

This whole classification thing is a big can of worms in electronic music. Lot's of great music, but for some reason many people who are into it act like fucking librarians. They apparently feel compelled to pigeonhole everything like a Dewey Decimal System of music. Personally, I'm tired of it. I listen to the good stuff I discover and push aside the bad, regardless of what "genre" it falls into.

Anyhow, hip-hop has been very influential on a lot of electronic music. And you can find some monster fucking beats out there.

Check out these tracks (in no particular order):

Future Sound of London - "Slider" on ISDN

Kruder & Dorfmeister - Bomb the Bass "Bug Powder Dust" and Aphrodelics "Rollin' On Chrome" remixes on K&D Sessions

Meat Beat Manifesto - "Simulacra" on Subliminal Sandwich even better "Simulacra (part 1)" on Trance Atlantic Vol. 1.... hard to find, but worth it! [Also on Trance Atlantic Vol. 1 is "Trance" by Himadri - very cool hip-hop beat too. ]

Massive Attack - Every song on every CD. Protection and Mezzanine are particularly great discs.

LTJ Bukem - Every song on every CD. Journey Inwards and Earth Vol. 3 (compilation) are particularly great.

Many, many more than I can think of right now.......

Those are a few of my favorites Barefoot!

Especially Kruder and Dorfmeister for D&B. That shit is smooooth!

PFM too.

I agree with the "dewey decimal" comment. I'll see if I can find this link I saw that explained all that and gave the histories of each style and examples.

I like progressive house the most. And I can normally tell if something is rave, house, electro, hardcore, trance or d&b (jungle). But the subclassifications are pretty hard to determine.

styles of techno

i prefer the term electronica, but if you check out APhex twin you'd get a good jist of what spectrums it goes across.

theres drum n bass
tribal
trancce
house
darkwave
trip hop
hardcore
happy hardcore
etc etc
jungle

Is progressive a style or just a way of doing "electronica" music? Just wondering cuz this cat I worked with was breaking some tracks down and talking about the build ups and drop outs and shit. He seemed to know what he was talking about but I didn't even know cats took the timing shit that serious.

Anyway... I might do something when I get back to the lab and run it by some of ya'll cats. Not really happy with some of my rap tracks lately so what the heezze. :)

I think "progressive" is more of an approach than a particular style. I see it sort like the difference between and architect who designs buildings that are unique, slightly challenging, and built to last, as apposed to one who designs cardboard cookie cutter buildings meant to sell quickly as the fad of the day.

Yeah, I can see how you'd get that impression coming from hip hop. I gotta say, to my ears the vast majority of beats coming out of hip hop in the past few years are pretty tired. Seems like all people are interested in these days is trying to become the next puffy wallet mega mogul.

The lack of vocals in electronic music really forces you to think hard about how to create movement, tension, drama, etc., in your beats. The electronic community learned soooo much from hip hop, but I think it's time for hip hop to look at electronica and learn some things - and start producing innovative, phat ass beats again!

Progressive used to describe a genre of music. About 15 yrs ago that's what we called music that has today evolved into techno.

Today though, I think progressive is more of a sub classification adjective. ie; progressive house. I could probably tell you if a track would be considered progressive house, but I'm kinda shy on a good definition.

Exactly what I'm on. You must be reading my mind.

Shit really is getting kinda boring. I'm not even really looking to do "techno" tracks. I just want something so fresh that a cat can spit the kinda shit that will dig so deep into your brain that you won't realize it until 3 years later when you play that shit again.

These cat's ain't ready for my voodoo. <----shit that's my nerve.

Lazi.. Who are you quoting?

Electronica is composed of alot of different influences, but I think "soooo much" might be stretching it a bit. YMMV:D

what about mutating it?

maybe we could come up with some more mad etheral type beats,
I mean alll we had at first was beats.

check out azzido da bass - dooms night , the timo maas remix... there you go... :D
