Differences in mics...

Howdy, I'm new here. I've been lurking for a while, and decided to finally join.

I've read through the FAQ here: http://www.hr-faq.org/, and I went through the listing of various mics for the various price ranges. As I'm very much new to this whole thing, I'm looking at the $100 and under range. However, I'm wondering if someone could lay out the differences among these mics. I know the obvious difference between the SM57 and 58, but I'd like to know the applications for the others, what they're best for, worst for, mechanical/electronic differences, the differences especially between the various Marshalls on there, etc.

If there's already a thread on this, I apologize...

Thanks.

Read the sticky at the top of this forum. It will answer all your questions and more. It's huge, but well worth your time.
I'm sure if you do a search for Marshall mics, you'll find the differences between models pretty quick.

Great links! I've not seen these myself. Don't know about the suggestions at recordingwebsite.com, though. They list a TLM-103 and AKG-C3000 as examples of mics used to record acoustic guitar  (where's a "puke-ing" smilie when you need one?)

Thanks! I'll take a look at those...

Flatpicker: what's the matter with the TLM-103 and the C3000? Do they sound bad for acoustic guitar?

C'mon, Flatpicker! You base mic selection on MP3's? As far as I can tell, an older 3000 will be "OK" if you don't have anything better, the 3000B is pretty good for a doorstop, and a TLM103 can make beautiful recordings on acoustic, depending on style. Is it a U87? No. However, at its price point (going up rapidly!?), definitely has to be considered against the competition. Good on piano. I'd say buy a Dragonfly for the money. YMMV. If a TLM103 makes you puke, please clean them up, and send me your rejects.-Richie
