Difference Between Effects Processors?

I got other POST on here about whats a GREAT mic and whats a GREAT mic preamp. Nows, thats what i was told i need to make good vocal tracks with. But without a GREAT effects processor wheres all the fun at you know, So i really need some help on which one would be good to have, i have about $1000 to spend on this, so i need one with alot of FEATURES.

I've been doing all my recording on my computer, with a $30 mic and a $200 soundcard, and with the COOL EDIT PRO i would put effects on my vocals, now my vocals would always sound like i recorded it in my room.

Now what i want to know is, the question i need asked, With a Great STUDIO MIC, and a MIC PREAMP, and with a Great EFFECTS PROCESSOR will i be able to record songs that sound like i went to the STUDIO??????????????????? OR do i need some other equipment?

All the best gear in the world won't help you if 1) there's no "great" talent in front of the mic, and 2) there's no talent behind the console.

A $500 4-track in the hands of a skilled engineer will get better results than a novice behind a Neve console!

I would consider the MPX-1 and M2000 with your budget.

If you want to have the knowledge of the mountain, you must walk the path of the valley.

In other words, if you have no knowledge of the equipment you would pay $1000 for, there is little chance you could get a good sound.

A good signal chain would consist of a great condensor mic, a Great River preamp, a good compressor and excellent A/D converters. This would get you started. Then you would need an understanding of frequency pile up that happens in a mix of several instruments and a voice. Then, after maybe a year or two of experimentation, you might figure out how to make your voice sound good.

Regarding effects, they are usually applied after the voice is recorded and wide awake has provided a good list.

Man, look at stereo systems...

Aiwa systems have a huge amount of "features" - bass boost, BBE, eq presets, karaoke, a billion ugly coloured lights to impress your friends, etc

A really nice higher end system has none of this crap.

Aiwa sounds like ass. High end system sounds great.

Features are no good without quality. I can say that despite the fact that I own a Behringer compressor . I'd recommend you try as much as you can, read as much as you can, and upgrade to something that has the "features" you need or could use, not just every feature there is.

Hopefully I'm not too off topic here, but does anyone know what the differences are between the TC M_one and the M_one XL. The ads say the XL has more reverbs for "live" use. For recording/studio purposes, are the extra features useful and/or worth the extra money?

A member I know here is selling a used Lexicon PCM 80. I will send him to this thread. For the $1k and under price range (I think he wants about $1k for it) you will find possibly nothing better!

hottsauce, with all due respect, you may be happier setting a more modest goal for yourself.
How would you feel about learning just how to record your tracks well first? There's an entire art concerning microphone placement alone.

Then you could take those tracks to a local pro studio to have them properly mixed, mastered, etc. It would be a great learning experience for you IMHO, rather than spending lots of $$$ perhaps unnecessarily right now.

I would look for a used Eventide. I think you can pick up a used on on E-bay for around $1000. Oldie, but goodie.
