Remember the Apex 460/Telefunken M16 controversy?

Telefunken USA apparently has a 'trade-up' program going on the R-F-T M16 to the R-F-T M16 MkII. They have a new circuit design and a custom transformer in it now. I guess the controversy spawned some embarassment and maybe some anger from M16 owners.

Its a FREE upgrade, too.

I didn't hear any fanfare about it.

Well, that's an honorable response by Tele. Dunno if it repairs whatever damage was done earlier. It's certainly a move in the right direction.

well if they give out the components, apex owners will do it too
it might still pay off to do it, in terms of final price..

Maybe the Apex owners should send the guts of their mic in and ask for the upgrade...

I recently purchased a couple of items from Vintagetones (Telefunken's sister company) and inadvertantly found myself having a lengthy telephone conversation with Toni Fishman (Tele's top guy)...as one of the harsher critics on this website of Tele's release of the M16, I have to say, after talking to Mr. Fishman that I've come around to see a bit more of his side of the story...without going into lengthy description, I came away feeling this guy really did have good intentions in creating a "more affordable" line of studio mics bearing the Tele logo (much like Squier guitars are to the Fender line, as he explained)...this new program to upgrade the mics with custom hand-wound transformers and NOS vintage tubes is further proof that he is committed to turn the circumstances around and make good on his intentions...I for one, give him now the "benefit of the doubt" that there was not any intention to mislead his clients...the series of circumstances he described to me concerning the development of the M16 and Tele's relationship with their Chinese manufacturing partner make for an interesting example of how good intentions can go awry...I wish Toni the best and I hope his M16 customers take full advantage of the upgrade program...as for extending the program to Nady and Apex customers, hmmmm...that might be public relations "overkill" (LOL)...

What I'm most intersted in is what the new circuit will sound like. Will it be worth the same $1400 price? Will it be that much better (or worse)? If anyone is on the Gearslutz forum, see if they're aware of this. I remember there was someone named Dan who was really urked when he found out it was the Apex. Wonder if he did the tradeup?

I'd agree this is a good PR move for TeleUSA.
