I have heard a lot of people that have bought the octavia MK 012 at Guitar Satan and had to return them . So i took the gamble and got 2 and the shockmounts, and i lucked out they sound killer compared to the beh"shiter" ecm800 i was using before.
That w/ a 57 on the snare and a cad m37 on kick, i was like a kid w/new toys.

Try to "burn" them in within the 30 day return policy.
There still can be a reliability issue, even though they sound "good".

I think the whole oktava / guitar center thing was started originally due to a few bad batches that made their way to the stores maybe 3-4 years ago.

Unless their stock is that old (which I doubt), my guess would be that oktava would have been alerted, and since corrected the problem (hopefully) by now. They've had plenty of time to do it.

I think this issue has been blown out of proportion just a tad, and carried out a little too long.

When I picked out a "good" Okatava MK-012's about a year ago out
of a group of eight at Guitar Center, out of the other seven;

One was completely dead.
Six had varying degrees of being either too muddy and or fuzzy (noisy).
One other one was "good" with a thick, rich tone.
It didn't match however, the more natural sounding one selected so
it couldn't be a closely matched pair, and back it went.

As chessparov pointed out, that's a big problem when buying Oktavas from GC. The two you bought may be "similar", but they may not be the best of the batch.

I don't think that Oktava has worked out the QC issues, mainly due to the sheer volume of orders, and very little feedback from their distributor.

I bought a pair of those at GC and they sound quite well together. First ones I tried too.

How did you like the CAD on the kick?

Thanks,

Its not to bad, i would like to upgrade to a sennh E602. But overall the cad gets the job done.

I also auditioned around 8 of them at GC, and only one of those was noticably off from the rest, with a couple of slightly hotter ones. I would say they were all acceptable, though it's worth it to pick the best of the litter.
I don't know that it's time to put this issue to bed, though it may be a little overstated. I'm sure that many people hear of this issue and just say forget it, which is their loss. Those of us that have gotten good ones know that these are quite good mics, nearly off the scale on value/price ratio. If you really want to feel the joy, get a tested Omni capsule from the Soundroom, and put it on your GC MC012. It'll take you places a KM184 can't go.

I took my chances about a year ago and bought one from Guitar Center and like it a lot. I had previously bought a MK 319 and didn't like it, it seemed to be top end heavy. I sold the 319 but love the 012. I replaced the 319 with a V67 and like that for vocals. The acoustic guitars(Martin D16 GT and a Seagull SM12 Spruce) on the song "I Love You" on my ampcast page were recorded with the 012.

I'm still trying to learn the art of "Recording Engineer" and "Mastering Engineer" but having fun in the process.

I was wondering if GC was alowing six or eight mics to be taken out to be tested, or are you having to do this in the store?

Well, unless your famous, and probably even then, you'll have to either do it in the store, or buy them all and return the ones you don't want. Doing it in the store takes a little stratagy. If you go during peak hours, two things are likely to happen. Either they'll be too busy to comply with your pain in the ass request to bring out all those mics to audition, or you won't be able to hear anything above the din of all those wannabe's jamming away. So lunchtime is out anyday, and anytime during the weekend is pretty dicey. Best is in the morning on a weekday. That's when you're gonna be able to hear, and the salesman isn't worried about missing some good commisions while he's catering to your pain in the ass request to sell such an inexpensive, low commission item.

Robert, thats for sure. Man, I went in & asked to audition their mc012's & the sales dude looked at me like I was nuts. After telling him there was no way I would trust his Q.C., he then said he would be more than happy to let me try a couple out, hooked up to some behringer peice o crap mixer in his live sound department while all the wannabe's in the world raged away on the amps in the guitar section, as the in store PA raged on with tunes from Megadeth, as ...... I got pissed.

In the midst of my frustration, I ended up grabbing a few that didn't have tons of scratched & dents & went home to check them out there. I actually got lucky and have a pair that are nearly identicle. Not to mention that they run at least neck n neck with an old friends K184's. I actually prefer them, and paid $99 each for mine. :)

That's why I brought my AKG 240 DF headphones to the store,
and kept the door closed in the "studio monitor room".
Also went over at a quiet time too.
