Hello everyone, i was just wondering about a new purchase of mine. See I just bought an MXL 990 Mic t help with my vocal recording and i was wondering does anyone have anything positve or negative to say about it. I would reall like everyones imput on whether i made a smart purchase or should i just send it back an get my money back.

MXL 990

This is a very inexpensive LDC that seems to get more negative reviews than positives. But I have two of them and find they work very well for narration, some male singers, etc. They have a pretty smooth midrange, a tight low end, but not much sizzle in the highs. I'm glad I have mine, but YMMV. At $70 I really feel I got my money's worth. I'll probably buy an SP B1 also and an inexpensive SDC for sizzled.

Hope that helps. At least you're off to a decent start.

thank ya'll

Thanks or the imput, i feel better now that i've gotten some responce, it's nice to know it's a whole lot better than those radio shack mics, another question, is it uni or omni directional, this might sound dumb but only cause i heard of some condensors being one or the other

It was a good purchase. You will love it for awhile. Use it and learn, and when it is time, then you will move on.
Oops, I'm sorry. I guess I was talking about American marriage. :)

If you like the sound with your recordings and you plan to use it for a while, then you made a "smart" purchase. It was cheap.

its a SDC, not LDC...and if it sounds good with your voice, you did good.....if it doesnt, you didnt......

looks like an LDC to me...

you could certainly do worse. it's a cardioid mic, which means 'unidirectional' i.e. it only accepts sound from the front and a bit from the sides, but rejects most from behind. good for seperation of sounds and for rooms where you don't want to pick up loads of the acoustics!

in fact, let me put that the other way, usually, you'll ONLY want omnidirectional mics when you DO want loads of the sound of your room.

The MXL990 has a 20mm diaphragm capsule... so does the MXL603S.

Wow, thanks ya'll, i got alot of great info that i wasn't even planning on. I guess i did make a good purchase, im happy with the results and i agree, wen im ready i will move on to bigger and better mics. But i do want to tll ya'll the site it was from musiciansfriend.com
