DI or Mic-Pre Question

Hi there, this question probably has an obvious answer to most people, but I'm unsure myself, so I thought I'd ask...

I live in an apartment so I record guitar and bass direct into my DAW (Edirol DA-2496 and REAPER at the moment) and process accordingly via Guitar Rig. I'm looking at making some major upgrades and am trying to determine if there would be a major difference in quality between recording through the line input of a mic-pre, or a DI box.

The mic-pre route would be cheaper because I could use it for guitar, bass, and vocals, but I'm willing to almost anything to not sacrifice quality.

I think yes... not familiar with the Edirol thing.

if your talking about gain staging and levels being pumped up a little, maybe some tone, you may gain some improvements...no pun intended.

I prefer a channel strip concept, and use this. the Strip kind includes everything without the cables. You get pre, comp, eq, de-esssshersss<spit>ssss>>. Strip is a great vocal piece, awesome for bass...don't use it on electric but could.

I do the same your talking, solo recording or friends....

with that said, I'm sure if you work at it...a pc interface box would work. most have great inputs (preamps).....and free software plugs like blockfish, and others are really impressive as far as sounds.

you could get your songs into a decent shape going striaght in I think?
