Desk Design, Comments Please

This desk will hold:

My 24 channel desk,
2 Motorized fader controllers,
2 PC's
3 PC Monitors,
A Laptop,
A load of rack gear
Pair of speakers.

I designed it to hide all the wires that plague my studio, also the parts that come down from the bridge will be on a hinge so i can swing open and adjust any wires if needed. The mixers will also be slightly inset into the desk to give it a more combined look. Im not sure what wood and colours I will be using, but the images below should give you a rough idea of construction.

If you can think of any problems I will having making this or things i havent thought of i really would like to know as I will be setting out to knock down my existing desk and be making this one in the new year.

That looks really good. I would, however consider tilting the console a little so that it's not just flat in the desk. One reason that commercial consoles have a tilt to them is to bring the controls farthest from you a little closer and it also makes it much easier to see all the little text and nomenclature on the knobs. And again, the rack portion looks good but I would angle it so that the face of the equipment is easier to see. I've often wondered how some people mix when they've got their compressors and reverb units down in a rack that is straight up and down, especially if the pieces are near the bottom of the rack. You'd almost have to get down on the floor and sit there to make adjustments or patch things in while sitting under a desk! Not only that but you'd be craning your neckOf course, much of what is done now is done with plug-ins and that changes things but it looks like you plan on having at least a fair amount of outboard gear that you'll need to adjust in a session. I'd also have the desktop go smooth all the way across the desk and not have that little drop off at the edge of the mixer section.
You're on the right track but those are the suggestions I have.

Thanks for the reply, The mixer is already tiltied slightly, so when it sits it will be tilted. As for the racks, I think it would be very difficult to add some sort of angle to them.. I dont mind getting on my knees now and again, but alot of the outboard I have can be midi controlled anyway.

Where does your keyboard mouse/trackball go? Keyboard tray under the desk?
 
Yep! Going to make a sliding draw with inset parts for keyboard and mouse.
 
That's not much "shelf space" to place your audio monitors on.
They look.... precarious.

Other than that, it looks real good!
 
possibly consider putting patchbays on the top of the desk.....
 
I suppose i could do, but i dont patch much in really... probably keep it on the rack so its one thing made easier for me...
 
not many apple computers in that setup for a guy with the apple logo as his avatar :) very nice design i want one.
 
If only i had the money for a mac... although I use them at colleg and im starting to go off them a bit. Thanks for the comments

Very nice! ;) Clean and neat. I like when I don't see the cables!!! The monitors could have a shelf. But, other then that nice work. I'll buy one! :D Oh ya, got a slide out for the cpu keyboard?
 
Hello Technominds. Nice design. I like clean and neat too. I do see a couple of things. Unless you have PRECISELY detailed how many rackmounts you have, like in a vertical section drawing of your rackmounts, I would DEFINETLY put a RECESSED BASE on those cabinets. About 3-4" high and a minimum of 2" deep. Especially for the computers. Keeps from accidentally bumping the faces with your feet.

And I agree with Michael to widen the bridge shelf for the speakers. Also, don't forget to put "isolators" such as mouse pads or other under the speakers. You could actually angle the front ends of the shelf to "cantalever" out over the console to support the speakers. Thats what I'm doing. I actually have a shelf supported on a steel frame seperated from the console. With the audio monitors, and 2 video monitors, and 2 computer monitors, a span of wood would deflect, so I have a steel tubing "support bridge" below it.

What are you building these cases and bridge out of? And what type of finish do you plan on? Have any drawings of the construction? Great graphics btw. What program are you using? Anyway, looks like it will work just great. Hope the finished product looks as good as the graphics. Craftsmanship is your friend when it comes to actually fabricating. Good luck with the project. Post some pics in the DIY thread when you start building. Its always nice to see the "work in progress" type pics.

I notice you have all the rack spaces filled. Is that the gear you have, or just example gear? - if thats the gear your have id add a few more rack spaces, cause there are no spare ones for any new units you buy.

This is my man question really, i would like to get some sort of black finish like the argosy desks, but i dont know how they achieve it! Any info on how i can get a smooth black finish? Also, im using 4D cinema... but im a graphic designer so this stuff takes me seconds!

Yea this is example gear, il have more than enough.. and if i dont then il build a floorstanding rack!

I also included some CD racks under the speakers. The desk should be able to hold 16U, depending on how y final measurements turn out.
 
Yeah thats nice. I was gonna say something about the monitors being on such a small piece of wood. Looks nice. Why two computer towers? Different functions or just got so much stuff you got two towers? lol

Yup, ive got two towers. Both with dual screen... then I use my monitor switch box to change the third monitor into the secon of the other.. if that makes sense :S. Its handy for doing many things actually. Sometimes i have the internet on one and music on the other... or sometimes i use FXTeleport to use the processing power in the second PC for my VST's. Its a very useful thing when your running mass plugins! They are also networked, but with this great software I can use my mouse and keyboard for both PC's... enough of my life story. Glad you like the designs!
