Just thinking about my last post under "Sonar wish list" about having a dedicated 12 or 24 track/dsp card for Sonar.
This idea rocks to me.
Look at the cost for a manufacturer, just in parts. I looked up some processors. On pricewatch, 600mhz Durons are $40. This is a cheaper name brand processor, but nowhere near as cheap as the industrial grade Motorola processing chips that a manufacturer would use. They would probably use one or two for designated track count and the same for designated plug in count, and maybe have onboard ram that buffers a good portion of music to prevent dropouts and stutters. In an industrial setting, we're looking at about $150, max, for the board, processing, etc. Development would be the biggest cost, I figure. I personally would pay money for it, up to $1000 if it called for it. If they could get them to market for under $800, think about it... for $1600 you could have 48 tracks of dedicated audio and plug in tracking. Just having 24 would be nearly perfect, if not plenty good in more than most cases.
In fact, just having one that dedicates 12 tracks would be nice, and then let your PC CPU take over anything additional. I'd pay good money for that, too, just for plug in processing.
I was just wondering how many people like this idea or not, and I always wanted to post a poll... so what the heck. Vote.
