it's time for me to lay down my hard-earned cash and choose, please feel free to ring in with a vote, i appreciate it!
.....1: tascam 424mkIII, (analog) or fostex digital 4-track. the fostex digital model is only about 50 bucks more, but it requires a free harddrive on my computer. well?

You will be able to do so much more with digital. Analog cassette just doesn't have the potential for professional recording. Many hidden costs involved too. Think about where everything is heading now, digital.

Good luck.

Go digital....you can always add analog warmth during mastering. But you can't take a poor old cassette and Improve it's S/N
ratio. Cassettes are fun... But limited.

Yo, man; for a few dollars more, you can have a Yamaha MD-8. Although it does not create CD quality because of compression, it does a nice job and YOU WILL HAVE 8 TRACKS TO TINKER WITH. No need dump two tracks on one track control. Rent one and see if you like it. Rent both and see which one does a better job. Best price I've found is Full Compass and they are on the net.

Digital does it.
