Hi Jeptha!

A local Missourian finally. I just wanted to say Hi, and I may know you. I worked at the Promise in Branson for 2 years as Matthew the Disciple. May have seen you around. Talk at ya later.

Matt

If you dont have a record deal you just arent sucking enough dicks.

VOX... just wanted to say hey to a fellow Canuck (how's Ontario these days?) and let you know that I downloaded a few songs of your website... (ok.. so actually, every single one.) Your mixes are pretty darn good... Really professional sounding.

Anywho... now onto the other stuff.. Jeptha.. you sound like the person to ask this to... of course, it's open for anyone else too:

So... I know that signing to a major label is only one moral step-up from "suicide by castration", but let's say I have a "hit". You know... the proverbial "Golden Egg" that Vox mentioned earlier (which I happen to agree is the only way to really "make it" in the biz)... Let's say further that I have a complete band that doesn't suck.. which is more than you can say for most of the schmucks that make it on the radio nowadays...

So.. let’s say all that is true... What is my best option?

I mean... and this is all hypothetical, of course... but let's say that you know you've got a song that will sell the crap out of an album... you know... like,.. as in... The heavens parted, and a host of angels sang in one accord as the lyrics and music slowly descended from the mouth of God straight into your music book,... and so now you've got this song that you have verbal assurance from God Himself will be a number one hit... let's say you had that song... what would you do...?

Just want to get your feedback on that. Seriously... even though the premise is absurb,.. I would like a serious answer.

WATYF

P.S... no.. all that stuff did not really happen to me... :p It's a hypothetical. :D

Does no one have an answer to that???

What... nobody around here ever write a good song before...?? :D

hehe

just kidding... don't want to incur the wrath of any "starving artists" :p

In the above situation I would put together a killer demo. Get a very experienced manager/lawyer to shop it to the labels and sit back while they all fight over you.

But getting an insider to believe in you is the first step.

Like Tex said..Also get some local airplay..Program directors/DJ's always like to break a band..If it is that "hot" label A&R is gonna hear about it..After all who do you think "pays"for "drivetime" and rotation..Thats right.. Record Companys so they always have a ear to your local radio station!

O.K. So basically the demo route is what you're saying.. but try to get some inside help and local airplay.

What about trying to play in the local scene so it catches on first? Do that,...?? Or just go straight to the demo route?

WATYF

It depends on where you live and how far you can travel..as far as giging goes {IMHO}..But the demos are whats gonna be heard by the folks who are gonna give you a contract..Someone who takes a interest in you is still going to have to get it approved{more than likely}..So they are going to need a CD for others in the rec. co. to hear..Also be ready to "showcase" your live show{Play Live}..If you are a rock band your going to build a part of your promotion by doing shows{support act}..This is where you will kiss ass of the local radio stations {so you will get mentions on air}and local retailers{politicans call this "kissin' babys, musicans call it meet and greet..LOL}..So you gotta be pretty good at doing your live shows for this reason..But who knows.. there are as many ways to get a deal as there are deals! Good luck and remember the "little people"..LOL

Don

Thanks.. I'll be sure to thank you personally during my Grammy Award acceptance speech...

:p

WATYF,

If I had a song like the one you described, I'd hold it very close to me and show it to only people who deserved to hear it. I would protect it from major labels at all costs. As soon as they get a hold of it, the song would be bastardized and exploited for the masses. A thing that was once beautiful will become the next fashion trend, or even worse *shudder*, the next Macarena.
