Hi all.
In the quest for capturing a "good" sound, I've gone to a lot of trouble to satisfy myself about the mic'ing options of my guitar amp.
It wasn't too much more effort to post the files to the forum here (since a lot of help has come from here I figured I'd help out) , so here they are.
Files downloadable here:
Clean guitar samples
Distorted guitar samples

If you want to read through some details, they are below.
Equipment:
- American Strat
- Suhr Roit distortion pedal
- modified Blues Jr (Tone circuit, speaker)
- SM57
I'll explain the files and their contents.
In the file "Mic position clean comp.rar", there are 13 files
- Mic position clean comp.mp4 , which is a compilation of all mic positions one after the other. Good for a general overview of what position sounds like what, but makes it hard if you want to A/B sample the first mic position and the 7th mic position. So I also spat out the individual mic tests which make up the other 12 files.
In the video, I've marked out where the speaker is in relation to the cabinet, so you get a rough idea of where the mic is pointing. In the test There were three positions:-
1. Cone - dead center
2. Middle - Half way between the Cone and the speaker's edge.
3. Rim - the point where the vibrating bit meets the metal outer rim.
There were also two types of mic position, "OnA" which is "On axis" where the SM57 was aimed directly at the amp. and "OffA" which is "Off axis" where the the mid was placed 45 degrees to the amp.
I think by now you understand the file names of the other 12 files as listed below. The preceeding numbers was just a way to keep them in order.
01_OnA_Cone
02_OnA_Middle
03_OnA_Rim
04_OffA_Cone
05_OffA_Middle
06_OffA_Rim

09_10cm__OnA_Rim
10_10cm__OffA_Cone
11_10cm__OffA_Middle
12_10cm_OffA_Rim
The other file, "Mic position dist comp.rar" is exactly the same kind of thing, except with a distorted guitar sound rather than with a clean sound

15_D_OnA_Rim
16_D_OffA_Cone

19_D_10cm_OnA_Cone
20_D_10cm__OnA_Middle
21_D_10cm__OnA_Rim
22_D_10cm__OffA_Cone
23_D_10cm__OffA_Middle
