My band and I are working on our first 'real' quality sounding demo. I get the task of trying to make us sound good. Anyway, here's one of our songs thats gonna be on the demo CD. I need some outside opinions.

Pretty basic stuff. Drums multi-tracked through the firepod. 2 guitar tracks - L and R. One bass track right up the gut, and several vocal tracks.

I'm mainly looking for overall mix and sound quality feedback.

Song's called "I wont".

Thanks. :)

Sound quality seems OK.
The drums are way too loud - esp toms.
the guitars could use a lift.
the vocals are godd.
The bass REALLY needs definition & probably a boost too.
A good start to the mix.

Greg!

Yes, the drums are a bit upfront, especially the snare in my opinion... According to me the kick's volume is were it should be... Try lowering the rest of the set, after you've done tha, lower the snare a bit more... I'm with rayc about the bass... Definition!

Okay, thanks guys. This is what I'm looking for. I'll work on it more today. :)

Okay, updated version up. Reeled in the drums, thickened the fiddles, and brought the bass out a touch more. I think it sounds much better. Thanks for the input.

I think over all it sounds great! The only thing I would say is I think the snare could use a little work. Perhaps a hair of thickness. On my setup it sounds pretty thin.

Really cool song and performance too.

Okay, I'll play with it some more and see what I can come up with. Thanks for listening. :)

Hmmm yeah the snare needs to be...fatter maybe? The drum fills seem kinda uneven i think because of the snare being up front the way it is. I like the guitar sound, but could it come up a tiny bit in the mix, especially for the bridge? Vox rock, dont change em.

Sounds real good to me...agree with others a bit more snare "crack" might sound cool.Great jam man. like the "chugga chugga" guitars!

Yeah thats some neat guitar playing!

Okay thanks guys. Please keep the input coming.

Another updated version in the link. Fattened up the snare and guitars a bit more. Tell me what you think.

Sounds good. Still something missing in the snare to me but it's just a matter of taste I guess. To me it's all attack. Have you messed with and verbs on it?

It's got slight reverb added to it, and some mild compression and EQ. By 'attack' do you mean that hard crack sound? It never sounds like that. The snare doesn't sound great on its own, so thats probably where the problem is, but this is also the first time I've been able to truly multi-track the drums so I'm sure I'm screwing it up somewhere. I think I need to step away from it for a little while and maybe start fresh. I don't think it sounds terrible, but I'm used to it. I just need to keep fucking with it.

Another song in the link.

"Guillotine of Love"

Please gimme some feedback on this one too. :)

Hey I think the song sounds great. I wouldn't do much to it if any thing. By attack I mean stick hitting head. No resonant trail. I don't feel like I'm hearing the drum as much as much as I personally would like. On the other hand it's not bad and I don't think the song calls for a snare with alot of ring. You may try a smidge of 900hz and a smidge of 200hz though and see how it sounds in the mix.

Trust me I'm already sold on the mix as a whole or I wouldn't have downloaded it to put on a cd:)

I Won't -
Sounds pretty good to me. That new equipment sounds pretty cool...
I'm listening to the latest mix (to this point). The instruments are nicely balanced and vocals are right "in your face" :) which is good for this genre.... Good tune, good recording....

The snare might be a drumagog occasion...sounds like you have the rest perfect man! Good job!

Yeah I'm in agreement with the other guys. On headphones, the mix is balanced, everything sits well and can be heard, nothing stepping on anything else. But yes the snare needs something. Have you tried copying the snare track? Throw some hard short release compression on the copied track, and and just EQ the original but leave it uncompressed.
