My recording equipment list is as follows:

1) Sony MZ-R70 Mini Disk Player/Recorder

2) SM 57's, 58's

3) 12 Channel Mixer (Behringer MX 1604A)

4) Portastudio MKIII (new)

Can I go from the mic's to the board, to the recorder?
Would this work and/or work fine?

Would I need a compressor or anything like that?

Would it be better if I went to the board to the 4 Track then the MD Recorder?

Im looking to record my bands demo (Drums, Guitar, Bass, Vocals).

Thanks

Yes, you should be able to go from the mics to the board to a recorder without any problems. By-the-way, by design MD recorders record compressed files.

options

if you are just looking for a demo, there are several options you have.

if you aren't really worried about stereo imaging, in other words, a mono demo, here is a neat little trick

when you set stuff up, you can do this:

assign all your vocals to SUB1 and pan them hard left
assign all your rythm stuff ie. guitar/keys to SUB 1 and pan them hard right
assign all your drums to MAIN and pan hard left
assign your bass to MAIN and pan it hard right.

now, run the SUB outs, and the MAIN outs to the portastudio, all 4 channel simul record. This way, when you do a mix down, you have the 4 tracks to mix down, and better control, rather than just a 2 track mix down

To gain more channels if you need them, you can use the behri as a sub mixer. For example, if you were micing a drum kit and needed 5 mics, plus all the other stuff, you could do something like this:

Put the drums mics into the behri, and feed either a mono or stereo out into the 4 track (using like ch7/8) in buss mode

this still leaves you 6 open channels on the recorder, where you could put the vocal mics and the guitar cabs in.

once you get everything on the 4 trk, then you can mix down to the MD

just a couple of ideas to get you started; :D hope it helps
