Demagnetizing cd?

I was at FYE yesterday and they were pushing these cleaning cd's at the counter. My first thought was how can you demagnetize a lens and if you could how does spinning a cd do it? Anyone have a clue how this works or are they jamming it to the public?

I can see using a cd with "brushes" to clean the lens........ I think the part about "demagnetizing" is bullshit designed to play on the phobias of green-marker-rimming audiokooks!

(I use the term "audiokooks" to denote the difference between respectable audiophiles and the nut-jobs who buy into the snake oil.)
 
Well, in theory, if you make the cd really strongly magnetic, and spin it, it would create a magnetic field that can be used to demagnetize the lens.

Howver, that magnetic field would have to be concentrated around the middle of the CD which would be hard, and it would have to be so strong as to risk blowing circuits in the CD-player.

So, yeah, it's bullshit, most likely.
 
That's just a bunch of crap. Any fool knows that the ink in a green majic marker contains a natural demagnatizer which will of course improve air, demension, clarity, nuance, solid bass, AND remove all bad ju-ju.
 
AH! NOW I get it. No, they don't demagnetize the pickup, they demagnetize the signal path!

I assume they do that by running a sinewave signal that goes from full amplitude down to minimum amplitude.

I can't guarantee you that this doesn't work. But I seriously doubt that it does. Because you *should* need WAY stronger magnetic fields than that.

Ah well.

Good way to get 15 bucks out of people.
