You'll do fine w/ a Maxtor 30-40gb, internal, easily installed, going for around $100-120.
Can't say whether it's possible to be too big.
You'll only put your actual .wav files on your audio drive.
Don't know much about memory but I'm sure a search will do you good. 256 should be all you need.
Don't know what to make of your device manager reading. I was only asking in the hopes that someone else here more experienced would know. You could probably search this forum about disabling onboard sound too.
Have you given up the idea of building a new computer? I think this would help you tons. I'm still curious to see this work with what you have now, though.
