delta 66 and omni i/o...opinions?

I have the opprtunity to pick up these 2 products new for 350 CND. Worth it? And for anyone who's had any experience with these, please add any comments.(sound quality,latency,problems?) How do they stack up to other cards out there? Thanks!

ps--one this I noticed about this combination of product is there are no midi inputs? are there any adapters that could be used to use either of these products as a MIDI interface?

both links are going to the same product, but I'm assuming you meant one to link to the delta 66 section.

Wouldn't this Omni Studio be cheaper for you? You can pick it up for $320 (USD), not sure what that would be in Canadian, but it's basically a delta 66 and the break out box....only should be a little cheaper than buying each individually.
 
That would be about 416 CND and it doesn't include the delta 66 breakout box, it's just the delta 66 PCI card and the omni i/o interface.
 
If you can get the card and the Omni for a total of $350 cdn, do it.

Just so you know, you won't need the breakout box from the Delta66 if you have the omni controller. Usually the Omni studio is sold as a package with the delta 66, minus the breakout box.

The Omni hooks up directly to the Delta66 with a special cable that looks like a serial cable. All your I/O functions are handled at the Omni unit.

Think of the Omni as an improved breakout box. Not only does it have inputs and monitor outs, it has preamps and headphone outs, inserts, etc.

If you're thinking you might get more I/O by using both boxes, you won't. The 6-in/6-out is limited by the PCI card itself.

And no, it doesn't do MIDI at all. You can use a SoundBlaster for MIDI, and patch between the two cards via cable or software config.

Overall, the Omni/66 is a great little system. I like mine a lot.

all stuff thats good to know, thanks, so how's the sound quality? I know it's 24/96 but how is it for white noise, and just overall? Ever have any latency issues?
 
Well, it sounds good to me, but I ain't that particular ;)

I use Sonar 3 and can get as low as 5 ms with my AMD 2400+ system, no real problems.
 
Hey Joe, I use the Delta 66 omni and the mic pres in the mic/inst ins are pretty pristine. I record solo guitar peices so I need that quietness when recording. I've never heard any white noise in my recordings. Just all the other noises coming through the condensor mics, like the birds outside, the dogs barking next door, etc. etc..

As for the latency, I have never noticed any at all. Of course you have to take into account that I only record two tracks at a time so I'm not really pushing the computer to hard.

I bought mine for $400 US in Dec 2003 so with inflation and everything, it's probably a pretty good deal. I don't think you'll be unhappy with it unless you want to record more than a few tracks at a time.

I know RAM prices have been skyrocketing, but I didn't know the same was happening with sound cards?
 
The thing that always put me off that Omni studio, is the lack of preamps.

You've got 4 inputs and only 2 preamps. Why? It means you have to buy more gear to use the other 2 inputs. Most people don't have a couple spare pres lying around. To me it always seemed more sensible to front the delta range with a proper mixer
 
I have the Omni/66 combo as well. The two preamps, to me, is actually a good thing - it means I can by two DIFFERENT preamps and slip them in the line in jacks.... I bought an FMR RNP (Really Nice Preamp) for this purpose.

Heck, since the Omni preamps are pretty clean and transparent, you could buy a Joemeek or even an ART thingy, to give yourself more sonic options....
